will he get better
my dog wispa loves to play with other dogs but the problem is he doesnt know how to play with other dogs.
he gets very excited boisterious to the point they dont want to play no more. there has been two dogs that could play as rough as wispa and one was a 10mth old staffy female and a large labrador cross. two other dogs hae played with him but only with him chasing them (picture him chasing a wippet ) but as soon as he finds a way to catch up they generally cant handle his behaviour. i try to keep him calm but it rarely works
when there are other dogs near i try to distract him, being putting the 'watch command' to use but he is so fixated on the dog it takes ages to calm him down!. when the field has no dogs or he cant see them he is fine, he's on his training lead and we practice recall and fetch but as soon as another dog comes he badly wants to
play.
all the owners have been good and seem to undrstand plus the fact he is young. a few have suggested our dogs play and we monitor the dogs but wispa doesnt take a hint when a dog wants to end the play.
i am constantly doing my training with wispa in the home and garden and in the field to help with keeping his attention. I wonder when will he learn to play nicely, do they grow out of it or only if certain tecniques are put into place. i am supposed to be going socialize classes next week couldnt go this week and hope it helps. im slightly dreading it as it will be a room full of dogs. i hope there are a few he can play /learn from.

Aw, Wispa is only 6 months old, so he's also going through puberty and testing the boundaries. But besides that, I know your situation well. We also work hard at distraction techniques and when they're off lead playing we monitor and as soon as the excitement levels start to spike we distract with a ball or some fun recalls and things like that or clip them on lead (keeping the mood fun and light hearted) and walk off.
Keep up your training - it takes time, patience and perseverance!

Wispa is still young and has lots of time to learn many different things yet. He will calm down eventually although it probably seems a long way off to you at the moment. You will have good days and bad days but the good days will be far more. Have fun with the training and good luck.

That's great to hear! We all have bad days, bounce back and you'll show them negative owners that with love time, patience & persistence you have raised a well behaved advocate for our beloved breedmazzyboo wrote:aww thankyou all so much! i needed to hear that x

At 6 months old, think 15 year old human on steroids!!!
Yes, he'll get better, but you may still find you have to step in from time to time to calm it down. Have you tried keeping him on a long (30' or 50') training lead so that you have the ability to just reel him in (with an appropriate command as well) when he gets too over the top?

thankyou i appreciate your words of support and encouragement
@caryll and Inezmaria, yes i purchased a 50ft long line and it has been great! so ideal for recall training.
Had a little incident with it for the first time yesterday which i posted in rant n rave but besides that its been so helpful.
I have been teaching him fetch at home and in the garden which he's doing nicely, well him trying to grab the toy out my hand when he's dropped it isnt so bad anymore as he now and leaves it on command. but my fingers are still in danger sometimes when he's excited but we're getting there
The long line has been great as we practised fetch today in field and he brought it back almost everytime. i use cheese or sausage. It has been helpful when he plays with other dogs too as i can grab him and step in as and when required. im just trying to work on him playing nicely with other dogs and maybe that comes with age as i guess he is still young.
Its so beautiful to watch when he finds a dog who plays with him and watch them running about He is so happy and its great exercise for him too.
