hi we have a 8 week old staff and he has as of last night been suffering from fits, taz had 4 then the 5th was while the emergency vet was here then another 3 while he was kept in over night. today we have been told after a injection to his veins he went from 11am to 4pm with no fits. i have been told by the breader this is comon as his dad had it at the same age as do the rest of the litter. how ever the vets have mentioned puting him to sleep but as his dad recoverd and a few of the siblings have we want to bring him home tomorrow as there is a chance he will be fine. He has been the same with biting and as far as we know it was after his fits but the vets have not said anything so we hope the treatment has helped prevent this behaviour. hope any of this helps

Hi there and welcome to the forum, I have separated your post so more people will see it Smile

I'm sorry to hear your pups not well, has the vet said what they think it is?

It was very irresponsible if the breeder from breed from a dog that has such a serious health issue Sad

Hiya from me and Vinnie, so sorry to hear this. The breeder doesn't sound good at all especially if the dad had the same, there should never have been a litter produced. Smile

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.

Sorry but I have not had a dog that has had fits since I was very young so cannot really help personally. As already stated sounds like an irresponsible breeder.

Oh my! I wouldn't know what to do. So young to be suffering, and what on earth was the breeder thinking.

Hi from us, I wish you luck as I certainly wouldn't want to be in your situation. I wish I could advise but I haven't a clue.

Oh, my goodness, poor little fella. Did the breeder say if the dad only got over it with medication? If so, then it's hereditary epilepsy and the outlook, for a pup that age is grim.Sad

How long have you had him?

don't worry about biting behaviour right now, Blink, the first thing to consider now is the fits.

I must admit that the fact your pup's dad had fits and the pup's brothers and sisters have also been suffering from fits is not good news. That dog should certainly never ever be bred from again.

If you have bonded and fallen in love with the pup then decisions will be hard (and believe me I have gone through a very similar situation to yours myself).

Don't let the breeder fob you off with "oh this is common" - it's not.

I do feel for you - please keep in touch New member 3198918699  New member 3198918699  New member 3198918699  New member 3198918699

The breader is a family member of mine and the dad got over the fits with no mediation and the vet she saw said nothing about him not having a litter. our vet not only told us that it is hereditary but also he has had a bad reaction to the panacur worming powder which the vet thinks is also playing a part due to the fact he was fine till he finished the cause of treatment. thank you for the welcome

Whilst I don't want to offend you by criticizing a family member, this dog should never have been bred from. Fits of that sort are not arbitrary. Pups have been known to have reactions to vaccinations and wormers, but not to that extent.

If you intend to keep this pup, then you must be prepared for the possibility that these fits may continue for life - just because the father had no more doesn't mean the son will be the same.

If he continues to fit, the you are looking at a lifetime of expensive medication and a shortened life span. The fits may also worsen with age.

Please, please ask your family member to never breed from this dog again, and to preferably have him neutered. You should also have your pup neutered at the suitable time.

Fingers crossed that's the end of it, but I'd still ask your family member to not breed from the dog again.
