English Staffs
Just wondering what everyones views on the English Staffs are. I believe them to be small, short and stocky but in proportion where as American staffs are tall and much bigger. I also believe in Australia we have bred our own staff which is in between them both. I have come across lots of people with what I call Ozzy staffs who claim they are English. When I went to Enlgand I saw lots of staffies and they were all really short and stocky. Am I getting the definition of an English staff all wrong ?

Re: English Staffs
The second dog is an American Staffordshire Terrier (note there's no 'bull' in the name) and is a different breed! It's really the registered version of the Pit Bull.

Re: English Staffs
Kennel clubs around the world didn't want to add the pitbull terrier to their official breeds, so a group of pitbull terrier owners decided to call their dog american staffordshire terrier and come up a with a standard and so many years after that the american kennel club and others accepted the american staffordshire terrier as a official breed. but today there are still some american staffordshire terriers are being registered as pit and american staffy just depends what type of pit you pefer.
Re: English Staffs
The American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff) is a completely different breed from the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Staffy, Stafford). AmStaffs are the AKC version of the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) which is not in the AKC registry. APBTs are in the UKC registry (which rumors have said was created for APBTs to be registered). Staffords and AmStaffs/APBTs have similar histories, but they split a couple hundred years ago and are now completely different breeds.

Re: English Staffs
I suppose, as with all breed standards, there is always some room for interpretation. That's why there is a wide variety in the dogs we see. Let's face it, if they were all the same it would be pretty boring!
But you're right, gem, the staff was always supposed to be a mix of bull & terrier & anything else just isn't a stafford!

Re: English Staffs
Its become really popular to advertise staffys in Perth as English and lately people I talk to in the street with a staff claim they have an english staff with papers. I guess its just a sales gimic to charge more or something.
Thanks everyone for your input.
