Hi All just found this website as I was looking for some information on a 5 year old Staff with some serious separation anxiety. Has started to become quite destructive when my wife leaves the house. It also seems to coincide with us moving house, and the poor old boy being stressed at his new environment.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Hiya from me and Vinnie, I think as you have moved house he is probably unsettled. Perhaps go back to basics by leaving for a few minutes and returning, whilst gradually increasing the time periods.Big Grin

Hi Inez & Vinne

We have just started to do the increased separation time, so will see how that works out over the coming weeks.

Looks like the laundry door will be getting a coating of Vicks vacorub as an insurance policy in the interim!!!

Its just really tough seeing him go through it

Cheers again

Welcome to the forum from Chiquito and I Smile

Having just moved into a new house myself, I can appreciate the destruction a put out, stressed pup can do in a short period of time ... and how hard it is to leave them knowing that they will become so upset when you go.

Personally, I have found familiar smells (unwashed bedding and mums old jumper for example) work well for comforting, while providing several really high value frozen kongs (instead of a meal) when I leave in the morning has helped with the destruction. Leaving the radio or television on for company is always helpful as well.

Hope that you are able to find something in there that helps. Don't forget to let us know how you get on.

Should also have added that it is important to make separation times as stress free as possible ... I always make sure I am absolutely ready to walk straight out the door before giving Chiquito his kongs and a pat goodbye. Short, sweet and positive leaves less room for our anxiety to play a part in theirs Smile

Thanks all for the comments and ideas.

we have been able to locate a vet who specialises in destructive behaviors & separation anxiety. Hopefully we can get to the root of the problem, and get some tips and advice on this issue. Then we can rectify as soon as possible, and get our little nut job back in a happy place.

Cheers
