Socialising Empty Socialising

Post by Tomrad26 Fri Oct 04 2013, 03:37

Hi guys.
I'm new to this forum and would like to ask for some help.
I have a 12 month old male staff and my mate had a 7 month old female staff.
We have tried socialising them but my male is to hyperactive and the female is scared of him.
Any tips to get them playing together.
Not sure if this matters but they are both de-sexed.
Thanks in advance.

Hi & welcome.

How have you tried to introduce them?

What exactly do you mean by 'hyperactive'? Just rough, or literally hyper?

Hi and welcome to the forum from me and Charlie Smile

Can you give us an idea of what actually happens when you try to bring them together? Is your male just a Boisterous, playful pup? That's normal for a Stafford, but you do have to make sure that you can calm him down if you need to. In what way is he hyperactive around your friend's female and how does she react?

Hi and thanks for the response
my dog (diesel) isnt rough he just gets too excited and with all his quick sudden movements my mates dog gets scared and runs away.
I try and calm him down he just doesnt listen his to involved in the other dog.
even when I took him to the vet to get desexed he just got too excited and wanted to play with all the other dogs and was barking.
its quite embarrassing and I dont know what to do.

you could try tiring him out before meeting the other dog? on lead walking together for about 10 mins might help. it will let the initial excitement of meeting subside and let the other dog gain some confidence.

I walked him to my mates house which is about an hour walk and was tired as soon as he saw her he somehow found this burst of enegry.
He just gets too excited with everything even when I get home frkm work he pretty much runs through my glass sliding door to see me. And when I walk outside to feed him he is even worse I try ignoring him but nothing seems to work.
Please help :s

It sounds like he has some impulse control issues. You need to go back to basics with him. Make him work for everything - food, playtime, walks etc. Make him sit and stay, or give you his paw or lay down - just something to let him know that you're in control and it's on your terms. Don't greet him when you get home til he calls down. If he goes mad when you go out to feed him, tell him to lay down, if he doesn't, go back in for a minute then try again. Repeat as many times as you need to until he gets the message.

And you could when you take him out for a walk, is you go first, to show who is boss, same when you come back, you walk in first always.
