Acorns
Does anybody know if acorns are good/bad for dogs? Where we walk there are a few trees dropping them. Moll tried to play fetch with one and kept dropping it by my feet then she chewed it up into bits!

Re: Acorns
Acorns are actually toxic to dogs in large amounts, so play should probably be discouraged. I doubt crunching up one would have done any harm, but for future reference it's best to avoid situations like that.

Re: Acorns
I didn't know about acorns either (knew they were bad for horses but good for pigs). Fortunately Kuchar ignores them.

Re: Acorns
Forever saying drop and leave it at the moment with acorns. They mostley chew and spit out but I know they have swallowed some little sods.
Another thing I have noticed this year is the vast ammounts of mushrooms that are about, more so than most year. Something else to pull them away from

Re: Acorns
Dempsey snatches anything he can, so I've drilled as many into my head as I can!
Most nuts are okay, though they should be fed in moderation due to the high fat content and phosphorous. Walnuts and Macadamia nuts should never be given to dogs, as they are toxic. Tree nuts, pecans, Brazil nuts and pistachios should also be avoided due to their Aflatoxin content. Dogs are a lot more sensitive to Aflatoxin than humans, so you should always be careful with them.cesca1 wrote:Righto! Thanks Eleanor :)Avoid acorns! Are nuts like hazelnuts good/bad for dogs?

Re: Acorns
Glad I read this! There's so many acorns around at the moment Axl tries to eat them but if he does get hold of one he will usually crunch it up and spit it out... I think he probably has swallowed a few though

Re: Acorns
A few most likely won't do any harm. It's just always better to be safe than sorry!
Dempsey has OCD, so we always need to be careful with him. Just yesterday, it kicked in slightly and he started madly snatching every mouthful of grass he could reach. It's always worrying, as he had to have an operation to remove a mass of grass in his stomach a couple of years ago!
