Flutterbys
Some of you may remember that Eleanor bought me a butterfly kit for my birthday. Well, here are.....
The caterpillars (sorry, the quality isn't great!)...
and the chrysalids in their final home...
They should start to hatch out into butterflies in about a week!

Re: Flutterbys
Ah - very pretty flutterbys!
I remember seeing them last a couple or so years ago when a freak wind blew a whole lot of them over from France.

Re: Flutterbys
That sounds great, I've seen a few this year. It's mainly Cabbage Whites in my garden

Re: Flutterbys
I'm not a big fan of insects, but make an exception for butterflies. I've had Large and Small Whites, Peacocks, Red Admirals, Tortoiseshells, Brimstones, Commas, Wall Browns and Common Blues in my garden this year - the buddleia has been a great help!
I'm just a bit worried how your Painted Ladies will cope in this cooler weather, or have you got a nice warm butterfly house for them?

Re: Flutterbys
They're fine to release, as long as there is some warmth to fly. Our garden gets quite hot, as we have greenhouses lining the side, so butterflies stick around for quite a while.

Ah that's good, and we are promised an Indian Summer any day now!
Love to see some photos when they "hatch"

Re: Flutterbys
Apparently they only need enough warmth to fly & mate! Then they'll go off & hibernate for next spring & lay their eggs. The food isn't a problem, either. Painted Ladies can travel thousands of miles in search of food.
