Too much love for everything!
Hi all,
My boy is 3 years old and still acts very much like a puppy! he gets very excited if he is around other people and dogs, he has always been around a lot of people and dogs since he was a pup so its not like he isn't used to seeing them, but it sometimes gets to the point where we are having to put him in a separate room (or some of my friends sit on the kitchen side) if we have company and he does not calm down, he will jump all over people ( there has been an instance when one of my friends went down on the floor to stroke him and he literally climbed on their head!) and he will stay like this until they leave, he doesn't calm down even after a couple of hours. he's fine when its just us (with the odd hyper moment)
Any advice on how to get him to tone it down a bit?

Re: Too much love for everything!
What food does he eat and how much exercise does he get ?
These are two important questions with regard to a dogs behaviour. If he is eating a lower quality food he will show signs of being a bit hyper and also if he doesn't get enough walks he will show similar signs.

Re: Too much love for everything!
Hi,
He gets around 30-45 minute walk every evening and this knackers him out and a good run in fields at the weekend, he also has a free run of the garden when at home, We feed him mainly on chudley's dry food unless its not available, we always read the ingredients in the food we buy to make sure there is not too many additives (i had to feed him bakers one night as it was the only food available and it was like someone had injected him with e-numbers!). he is only like it when there is other people or dogs around he is fine by himself with just us, we also walk him with a friend and their dog and he is fine with them while we are walking, but if we bump into other people he goes all silly again

Re: Too much love for everything!
It maybe an idea to try to fit in another walk during the day if you can, 2 walks of about an hour should be OK for him. Bakers is a low quality food containing lots of fillers, I am not familiar with Chudleys is it a food for working dogs ?

Have you had him from a pup, if so what training are you implementing in stopping this behavior and what have you tried? I would up the exersize also, gardens aren't the same as being out and about with new smells.

Re: Too much love for everything!
The main thing we try to do to stop it is try to ignore him when he is jumping up by turning back around or sitting away - Friends sit on the kitchen side as he cant get up there and then rewarding him with attention or treat once he has calmed down, we have also tried to teach him a command, when at home with us if he begs for alot of attention (he tries to get in my lap alot) or jumps up when we come in i tell him 'thats enough' and he stops, this doesnt work when we have company he will maybe stop for a few seconds walk out of the room amd come back in and then continue to jump up.
I will start taking him for an extra walk in the morning to see if that helps.

Another idea....... maybe try just popping his lead on when people arrive that way you can keep control then praise him when he is calm again.

Re: Too much love for everything!
You have to keep him calm, having friends sitting on work tops in my experience will only excite them. Back to complete basics whilst in the house. As Kathy said when you have friends round keep him on a lead until calm, do you have a bed where he can put where he can see you but you have control and when he can stay still without a lead use the bed as somewhere to stay when you have guests. You will have to teach this everyday, when you play/ eat/ anything just put him into a sit position and praise when you release so to speak.
Getting excited by visitors is common but the main thing is you and your guests have to act the same and always discourage this behaviour. Good luck. Xx

Re: Too much love for everything!
staffie his age need 2/3 walks a day for about an hour or you going have bored dog
Re: Too much love for everything!
He has a crate which he sleeps in at night, we also have a stair gate between the kitchen and the living room and he stays in the kitchen when we have dinner. We have also tried putting him in the kitchen when we have people round so he can still see us through the gate, he whines alot for a while then calms down, we let him out of the kitchen when he calms down but as soon as he's out he gets excited again...its not so bad with people he spends alot of time with, we had a friend that stayed alot and hes not as bothered with them now and doesnt get overly excited, i try telling people not to stroke him when he jumps up etc

Re: Too much love for everything!
Agree with steve plus you have to educate people coming into your house. Flaying arms about means "play" to a dog. Every single person that enters your house must ignore the dogs for 5 mins and then fuss em up for a bit if need be. Ill be honest with you I don't follow my own advice on this and roll about like a lunatic with my two but I can take the dew claw rips into my arms and blunt force bites, what they will do however is leave visitors alone period because I teach the visitors as well as the dogs. Dads for rough play everyone else is no go teath wise...unless you visit my house dressed as a squirrel. ...ssh dont say that word

Re: Too much love for everything!
We do tell everyone that comes in to ignore him, i tell them not to look at him aswell as he see's this as an ivitation to play for some reason. I even tell people off for not ignoring him and trying to play with him before he has calmed down. We've also tried taking him for a big run before people come round and not even that slows him down where as normally he would sleep for an hour or so after this.

Re: Too much love for everything!
Have you tried giving your visitors treats to give to him once he is calm?
I keep a treat bag on the buffet just inside the door, visitors grab treats as they come through and Chiquito is not allowed to have them until he sits. Sitting = treats from people, Jumping = ignored and no treats. I he really will not calm down I completely remove him from the house and place him in the backyard until he settles, reintroducing him on lead and again with treats for sitting to say hello.
Do remember that anything you do must be consistently done and done consistently over time for it to be effective.

Re: Too much love for everything!
Defo more exercise needed, and the sit stay and watch me command with tasty treats is worth a try. Try giving your visitors some treats also.

Re: Too much love for everything!
hes only doing this becasue you only taking him out once for 35mins isn't enough for any type of dog..
Re: Too much love for everything!
He does get very tired after long walks and always has done hence why he only gets about 45 mins, he tries to sit whilst walking and has done this since he was a pup, he will go for longer when the whether is cooler, he doesnt enjoy the heat in the summer (i take him in the eve when its a bit cooler) he wants to sit under a bush after about 5 mins. He gets lots of play at home aswell eg tug and fetch and chasing me round the garden! so he is kept active, when we take him to fields he will run ahead then lay down untill we catch up and does the same again

Re: Too much love for everything!
Wow, I'm going to try putting Chloe on a lead when people come in - what a good idea, I've never thought of that. Lola just wiggles her bum and greets them nicely, while Chloe jumps to ear height which can be a bit frightening for some people! I know she just loves EVERYONE but not everyone sees it like that
