Re: Piranhas are hard work
This may not sound appealing to your wallet, but that often happens if there isn't enough room. Six adult piranhas would probably need (roughly) a 100 gallon tank - preferably more! They're extremely territorial and are pretty much always hungry, so being close to each other is often a big temptation to have a munch at a nearby tail.
Having said that, too much room and not a big enough shoal can also make them bad-tempered. All about balance with these fussy fishies!
You could also try upping their feed and seeing how that goes, to ensure that they're fully fed. It can also help to widen the variety of foods, to prevent boredom.
They do sometimes still fight though. Unpredicatable and territorial little monsters! Especially Red Bellies.
If you decide to add in new piranhas, make sure you rearrange the tank and substrate so that the territories are all mixed up. Otherwise, territories will already have been established, so the old piranhas will probably attack the new ones.

Re: Piranhas are hard work
little bitey things , remember when we were kids me dad took us to the pet shop to get a hamster , they picked it out with a little cup on a stick thing and it escaped , my brother stuck his hand in to get the poor little fella and it came out hanging off his finger needless to say we never got a hamster that dayjaney wrote:Why have big bitey things? I quite agree!janey wrote:Why have big bitey things? Get a hamster lol Xx
I had hamsters when I was a child (many moons ago!), and they don't bite if they're handled properly. They certainly didn't try to eat each other!

Sounds like you just have little cannibals on your hands then! Little sods are notorious for it!
Any pics of your remaining two? I love piranhas! They look so comical!
