Jambo, my beautiful little staffy!

Thanks Glad you liked the video! Jambo is 15 months old and my lovely GSD, Tessa, is 7. They are the best of friends

The trick is really a combination of two.("side" and "beg" From a down position use a treat to lure nose to shoulder blade and that should get your dog on his side. Mark and reward (either clicker or verbal). only use food lure eg three times then pretend you have it but still mark and reward straight away. Once your dog is doing this easily I would then add eg "side"cue as it's really useful for example if you're at the vet's and need them to roll on their side.The movement of your hand (more or less a semi-circle from nose with outstretched neck to shoulder blade) is what will become the bang cue (signal to drop on side). When I shoot my hand is shaped like a gun but I shoot with a semi-circle, if that makes sense.
You then teach the beg/sit pretty position. Easy way to do this, until your dog gets used to doing it himself, is by putting your dog in a sit and standing really close in directly behind them. Use a treat to guide their head back and straight up until they are upright. It can take a bit of practise before they can balance. The raising of your hand (initially with the treat) is what then becomes the beg/sit pretty or as I like to call it "Stick 'em Up" cue. Only chain the two behaviours together once they are really reliable separately .
