Here we are then
Hello, this is Den. He is about 3 years old and we rescued him just over a year ago. He is absolutely fabulous and we love him to bits. I would be most grateful for some advice about a recent incident we had involving Den biting another dog - is it appropriate to put it on here? I can't download the photo

Hi, I'm back
Finally worked out how to get the photo on. Anyway, thanks for all the welcome messages, what a nice bunch of people. This is Den, he is about 3 years old and has always got on well with all female dogs and most males, just a few minor run-ins over the past year or so since we have had him. But last Sunday after a lovely walk shared with a female staffy, he got hold of a springer spaniel (who was on his lead) and just would not let go. It was a terrifying scene for everyone involved, luckily the springer is OK, a cut ear but no apparent lasting damage. In hindsight we wonder if it was a male thing - the springer is also an intact male and perhaps there was jealousy over the bitch. Anyway, we now feel obliged to muzzle Den which is such a shame but we don't feel confident enough to read his body language early enough to prevent this happening again. There were no obvious signs that things were about to kick off, all their tales were wagging, no growling. I would be grateful for any advice.

Re: Here we are then
Just found this very informative piece about dogs fighting, hope it helps.
Fighting between dogs of the same sex is common and will occur naturally. Dogs have always fought over food, the right to mate, their position in a pack, and in defence of their young or their territory.
Dogs on a lead sometimes become very possessive of their owner. Fights can break out between two dogs on a lead passing close by each other, or when two dogs are off lead and their owners are in close proximity.
What may happen when two dogs meet cannot always be predicted. A normally friendly dog may take a particular dislike to another dog and start a fight with it.
Preventive action can be taken by owners who understand the body language and facial expressions of their own and other dogs.
Common signs of aggression or dominance include:-
Slow and deliberate movements when approaching other people's dogs
Stiff body movements
An enhanced profile, ears erect and the hairs on the back and neck raised
A lowering of the head and extending of the neck forwards with the tail horizontal or upright
A direct, hard, unwavering stare
Pronounced and frequent lifting of the leg
Urination, growling, snarling, curling of the upper lip, or the lips pulled tightly against the teeth
Dominance posturing such as mounting the other dog
When one dog is being walked on a lead and another, not on a lead, approaches, every attempt must be made to prevent the dogs from making contact with each other. The owner of the leashed dog should leave the scene with their dog by backing away, slowly and cautiously and keeping between the two dogs. Fortunately most dogs that are aggressive towards other dogs are not aggressive towards people. If the owner blocks their dog from the other dog, it may defuse the encounter.
