Daddy shouldn't be in charge...
The last few nights, I've been in charge of getting up for Bruno and taking him out for breaks in the middle of the night.
Last night was the first night we started our 'proper routine' as my partner is in work today. Instead of me sleeping on the sofa, I slept in the spare room (my partner cannot cope without sleep - it's much easier for me to just let him sleep) and had my alarm set for 3am to take the little man out. After that, he was going to be left until 7 when my partner gets up to have his breakfast etc etc (something I've been doing). Bearing in mind he's been so good with his house training so far, what I heard from Carl this morning shocked me.
He peed FOUR times on the rug in the space of half an hour. Four. I don't even know how that's possible. My partner said he wasn't interested in going outside and just kept whining to come in and when he let him in he peed!!
I've told him he has to wait til he's done his business before he's allowed in... Bah! I feel like we've taken a step back now with his training. Tonight I'll be going back to basics and taking over again. If I have to get up at 6 then so be it.

Awww poor little Bruno! Don't feel like it's a step back, he is only young and still plenty of learning to do! It may be that he is just a little used to you taking him out in the mornings so probably wondered what was going on! Don't let it get to you, he will do great in good time x

Aww Bruno, don't worry too much, he is still very young and they have little bladder control as a puppy. He may have been showing off a tad as been used to you doing the routine, keep at it its not a step back just a little blip.

Re: Daddy shouldn't be in charge...
I think you're right, maybe he was testing daddy's boundaries haha.
He's been good with me all morning, he even whined at the door to be let out when he needed a poop.
He's a clever boy and he's doing well with his training. Maybe daddy needs to try harder hahahahaha.
We're going to visit daddy at his office later and meet all his work colleagues who have been desperate to see Bruno, so that will be exciting... He's getting plenty of sleep in now so he has loads of energy for playing with daddy later!

Re: Daddy shouldn't be in charge...
Just been down to Bruno for his 3am weewees and he'd already done a wee in his bed... Should I be going down more often in the night or persevere and he'll get there?

Re: Daddy shouldn't be in charge...
Hi when sasha first came to live with us she was 7 weeks old after advice from the forum I was getting up with sasha at 3am to let her out in the garden. It was hard work at the time but was really worth it because now I take her water up around 8pm and she goes out around 9.30 in the garden then she actually puts herself in her crate and she is now able to go until 6am with no problems and we don't have to do the 3am anymore shes now 15 weeks. It is hard work but it really does work

I must have missed it but how old is Bruno ?
If necessary try fitting in another trip outside for him during the night if you can as it sounds like he needs it.

He's 7 weeks. I think I'll start doing 2am and 4am instead of just 3am. Might help him out a bit.

Re: Daddy shouldn't be in charge...
I'll set my alarm earlier and give him two night time loo breaks instead of one and see if that helps.
This is giving me a big flash forward to if me and my partner ever have kids... I can tell who'll be up at night!!!

Re: Daddy shouldn't be in charge...
Yeah if it's best for Bruno I'll have to do it.
I think I'm just feeling worse at the moment because I also have a cold and a really bad cough so the sleep I do get isn't great!
My partner always says "I'm the one that has to go to work for 8 hours a day..." and I feel like saying Yes but I'm the one that gets no sleep and then has to be awake all day looking after the puppy and running my business and cleaning the house while he naps!!
Then daddy comes home after work and gets to play with the puppy, have his dinner made for him and gets to sleep in a comfy bed while I'm camping out in the spare room!!
But I do love them... I wouldn't be without my boys! Xxxxxxxx

Re: Daddy shouldn't be in charge...
Ok I'm despairing.
I've just got up at 1am for Bruno and he has ALREADY peed on his bed. We went to bed at 10pm, I know he can go three hours. Why has he suddenly decided to go in his crate?!
I could have cried, honestly. I put him outside and knew straight away he'd peed in his crate when all he wanted to do was come inside and play. It is so frustrating especially when he's so good during the day.
I am SO tired. I feel like I'm trying so hard for nothing, I may as well ignore the little bogie if he's just going to pee in his crate anyway! (I never actually would ignore him.)
He's just crying for attention now. I feel like he's playing me. I washed his bed yesterday and it will need washing again today.
Do I sleep on the sofa and take him out every time he stirs???

Toilet training can takes weeks. He is very young has little bladder control at that age, perseverance is the key. Do not tell him off when he does wrong but praise him when he does right.
I think Roxy took a few weeks before she got it.

Re: Daddy shouldn't be in charge...
Don't despair, just keep it up bruno is only a tiny totter & everything's new, he's away from his mum & siblings, he will have accidents, his bladder is unable to hold the wee in and when you gotta go you gotta go, patience & persistence is the key, it won't happen over night, but he will get there

Re: Daddy shouldn't be in charge...
Well as an update for you all. The night before last Bruno went out for a wee at 12, 3 and 5.30 and then my partner got up at 7 with him. No accidents in his bed.
Last night he went out at 12, 2.30 and 5 and when my partner got up with him he'd peed in his bed!
Another bed to wash, and so it goes on. Some nights he's fine and others he just seems to do what he wants. I'm sleeping on the sofa with him and get up whenever he cries, so I don't know what more I can do. When he goes out at 5ish I come back up to my bed in the spare room because I know my partner will be down at 7 and I didn't think he'd need another wee before then.
Looks like I'll be on the sofa all night!

Re: Daddy shouldn't be in charge...
It's still very early days and he will still have accidents. Darcy was dry in the day long before she was dry in the night, please don't be offended but I think perhaps your expecting a little to much from him he's only 8 weeks
Guest- Guest
Re: Daddy shouldn't be in charge...
I'm not expecting too much from him, I've had puppies before and I know exactly what to expect. I know he'll have accidents it's just confusing when he has the exact same routine and I know he can go two hours without peeing, but he went in his bed anyway?
It's very difficult not to get upset about it when you're averaging 5 hours sleep a night and the prospect of it being that way for weeks to come isn't a nice one to think about.
I know that if we persevere then we'll get there and it's not going to happen in one week but it's still very upsetting.

Oh I know those early puppy days can be rough, I remember them well, I remember thinking what have I let myself in for! And their was definite crying & sleep deprivation too.

Re: Daddy shouldn't be in charge...
I haven't had this little sleep since my last puppy four years ago. My brain must have blocked out the trauma of it all haha. I had a full on breakdown in the middle of the night a couple of nights ago and was crying sitting in the middle of the living room floor LOL.
I'm not very well either with a cold and a cough which I think is taking longer to go away because of the lack of sleep so it's a vicious cycle! But I have been promised a lie in tomorrow so I'm looking forward to that...
It's all worth it when I look at my little Bru's face and realise I'm so unconditionally head over heels in love with the little Ratbag!
