Don't forget to check your collars and leads
Meant to put this up a while ago and forgot
Something most people take for granted is that their leads and collars won't break in any situation, and neglect to check them regularly.
It's something i've always done out of habit, but even that hasn't stopped Chance breaking multiple collars and leads, although he hasn't done in a long time now, as i've found a collar/lead i'm very happy with, but in the past when he was a hell of lot more reactive it has happened.
So I do recommend that once in a while you check the connections on your collars and leads for signs of wear but also if theres any wear elsewhere on them, Chance has broke both the fastening i.e trigger clip and snapped a lead clean in half like the below photo.
Pinched photo from a friend to demonstrate what can happen, this was by a spooked lurcher who tried to run away snapping this here.

Re: Don't forget to check your collars and leads
I've not had a collar snap yet but have had the clip on the lead break before. I always carry a spare lead with me in my bag along with everything else

Re: Don't forget to check your collars and leads
We always walk the dogs with harness and lead on and whilst walking around town etc then double ended lead one on collar and one on harness , little bit more control and double safety

Thanks Ella. A very good piece of advice, especially if walking near a busy road.

I love my strong stuff collars, although I do check them frequently I worry a lot less about these failing than I do shop-bought ones!

Re: Don't forget to check your collars and leads
Also, the metal catch that attached the lead to the collar, if you have had them awhile, they can stick when you pull it down to attach it. We have had a hairy moment where we hadnt realised that the clip hadnt sprung back up, and she just all of a sudden wasnt attached to the lead and ran off. Heart attack material right there!
And, even if it springs back, it could also be a bit loose, especially on the long lines we have bought from ebay. Lou face plants into the grass quite a lot, rubbing her nose into the ground (its like walking a snake), and from doing this she has managed to make the clip come open. x

Re: Don't forget to check your collars and leads
My biggest fear since i've started walking Misty every day now, and she still pulls sometimes. I went and brought the heaviest duty lead I could find, and she also has a new studded leather collar lol.
Shes already snapped the clip attaching her to a chain when she saw hubby.
