Re: Lola covered in lumps
You may want to try giving half an antihistamine in case it's an allergy to something. Picture is not that clear so unable to ID it, sorry.

Re: Lola covered in lumps
I'd say an allergic reaction to something. If it was bites I wouldn't have thought there'd be so many of them.
If Piriton doesn't help then give your vet a ring.

Yes. Piriton, though, not Piriteze. But don't tell the chemist it's for your dog or they won't sell it to you!

Just had another look and noticed like orange specs in the hair folicles. Excuss the spelling

It sounds a lot like chiggers. They live on the skin of an infected dog and use their saliva to break down the skin to feed. A telltale sign is seeing little orange/red dots.
Bathing with oatmeal shampoos are supposed to get rid of chiggers, as well as using diluted green tea to rinse the fur afterwards. It might be worth phoning your vet to ask for advice, though.

I was thinking an allergic reaction as well, but Eleanor for the benefit of us all, what are chiggers?

Re: Lola covered in lumps
A chigger is a type of mite in its larval stage. They're not host specific, so they can latch onto humans as well as other animals and feed on skin - annoying little things. Because they basically inject their saliva into the skin to break it down, then chew it up, it causes discomfort and itching, as well as bumps just like the ones shown in the picture - raised and slightly pink/red.

Ugh - thanks Eleanor and Caryll.
I've never heard of them - we learn something new every day.

Aren't they horrible?
Of course, it might not be them, but it's best to get Lola looked at.

I've never heard of them either! I would have said some type of allergic reaction to something but after reading Eleanor's post it definitely sounds like chiggers. Poor Lola! I hope she has a speedy recovery!

Re: Lola covered in lumps
On the subject of itchy lumps, whether from insects or allergies, I've always put Anthisan cream (an anti-histamine) on myself and it works wonders.
Does anyone know if Anthisan cream is OK to put on dogs?

Re: Lola covered in lumps
A lot of vets recommend it. As per usual with things like that, it's best to try some on a small patch of skin first to make sure there are no reactions, but it should be alright.Lynda wrote:On the subject of itchy lumps, whether from insects or allergies, I've always put Anthisan cream (an anti-histamine) on myself and it works wonders.

How is Lola doing? Did you find out if she has chiggers? Hope she is doing better and you have found the cause of the lumps!
