what a mess...
watching the defra parliment debate.... your dog is okay if it bites someone trespassing with criminal intent but not if they have no criminal intent. Excuse me but how the * do I teach my dogs tresspass laws...they do sit, lay, stay, high five and paw pretty damn good but im gonna struggle with this one. The most ridiculous thing was the copper sat there suggesting this with a face like all dogs should know this... worst thing is the guy was a dlo... any suggestions on teaching my two common tresspass law??? Just goes to show how crap the dda is.
Have been watching for a few weeks and I must say as much as I have been overjoyed with some suggestions ive been infuriated with others. There seems to be alot of people that know so all about dog behaviour making all the decisions and ignoring the experts. Assistance dogs were some of the worst... when asked on a particular question they said "we have no opinion on this dont ask us again" typical that they are there on the dda act but wont offer anything to the mix apart from quoting the dog act 1871.... shocking...

Re: what a mess...
This is quite the talk at some of the small rescues.
It has potential to reach beyond the owner/handler, and some rescues are watching to see the outcome and whether to continue or pack it all up.
*If* it goes through in the guise many fear it will, then the last bastion of hope is sensible judges at court time.
Can anyone be sure how their dog would react if the meter man helped himself to your front door (not unheard of) and let himself in to read, say, the gas meter?
Or the tv licence chap?
Or a bailiff?

Re: what a mess...
I can well agree with posties etc coming onto your land etc but the wording includes a space with no access, like a gated locked yard. I can keep my two away from front door easy but around the back I have a garden with no gated access. In the eyes of the law that are being proposed my dogs have to make there mind up if a trespasser has criminal intent...insane. what planet are they on. I feel for you Keith mate.

Re: what a mess...
As I understand it, the proposal hasn't been ruled out that the dog can be in trouble for causing alarm or distress - forget biting, or pinning, just growling and barking seems to still be in the frame.
Some silly plonker decides to use your back garden as a shortcut, dog barks, complaint is made. Where to go from there?

Re: what a mess...
Yeah saw that too. The act is so vague its terrible. Even down to a dog knocking someone over greeting them is classed as an attack for the statistics.
We had one guy shout at us to put riley on a lead even though he was 100 + meters away yet if he had gone to police he would have had a valid complaint just because he was a big dog and he scared them. Not mentioning he had just had had a crutiate op and was hobbling around poor boy. I was incensed and went over to have a word...havent seen him since

if any of these were to come in my house they WILL 100% be bitten, and probably what the law would say 'mauled' not just a one of bite.

Re: what a mess...
What a mess indeed. So a dog is supposed to mind-read whether an intruder on his territory has felonious (or worse) intentions or not. A dog cannot possibly be expected to do this; the only exception being when the dog's owner allows the "intruder" onto the property, when the dog should take his cue from his owner.
As someone once said - the law is an *.

Re: what a mess...
As usual, the knee-jerk reaction prevails.
"If we make this the law, then we're covered"
Forget the decent, law abiding folk who are scared stiff to open their back door in case there's some p*ss head using their garden as a toilet - after all, their dog might take exception to it & bite the b*rstards!

Re: what a mess...
Clearly the people who have discussed this don't own dogs! Stupid people!
Although I will say if the person came in had a car parked outside with a loud exhaust Hugo would probably let them in lol

Re: what a mess...
and you can gaurentee if its a little snappy rat that barks or nipps at someone that will be differant matter as with them being so small and carried and lapable they would be acting that way with fear and they could never be a treat to anyone
if someone walked in my home or ventured into my rear garden they got same amount of chance of being met angryly off memphis as they do of getting there ar5e kicked off me you should not be frightened of some one intruding on you in your home

Re: what a mess...
I was going to ask that ^^ what breed of dogs are they referring to? I don't think they would report my mums little Yorkie for biting their toes on the way in but Hugo would be reported ..

The dda ( dangerous dogs act) covers all breeds of dogs section one is breed specific but thats not what they are proposing to ammend. Currently dda doesn't cover private property which alot of what the debate has been about. I will credit rspca, blue cross and a few other organisations with putting up an exceptional defence for dogs with some excellent imput. My heart sunk when the chair a woman from defra pipped in about herself being bitten by a gsd when she was younger...
