Lola did a Houdini...
went for our usual evening stroll once it had gone cool, on tracks and routes we walk daily. as usual, she was off lead, and wandering ten or fifteen yards ahead of me. she walked past a track, i turned down it as usual, and within ten seconds she catches up. without fail. until tonight. i waited half a minute, then went back to the first path, she was no where in sight.
no panic, she's probably in the long grass, you can see for half a mile up that way, and, once round the bend, another mile. i half jogged to the bend, getting a little more panicky, trying to keep calm and calling and whistling.
at the bend, there was no sight of her. a dual carriageway goes over the top, with a small footpath up to the road, i sprinted up, expecting the worst, but hadn't heard brakes, horns or anything else.
i got to the road, looked one way, no sign, started to run the other way, and was greeted with the greatest thing i have ever seen. Lola, looking happy to see me, on the footpath, calmly walking back towards me, with 70 mph traffic, wagons, cars etc not three feet to her right.
without over reacting, i gave the "wait" signal (never been so glad that i taught the basics with actions and words, she'd never have heard me) and got to her, attached the lead, and just held her to me.
i have never, never been so scared. i dont know why she ran, there was nobody around, and she usually stays within line of sight of me, always checking where i am etc.
and like the usual caring hound she is, she's snoring on the bottom of my bed...

Re: Lola did a Houdini...
That is the MOST scary feeling isn't it. One reason Kuchar is on an extendable lead - I can't take these heart attacks !
So glad it ended well - hope you are recovering Asa!
