is she in whelp?
Hi,
I mated my girl Crumble at the begining of june and after four weeks the vets did a scan and said she was not in whelp, since then her nipples have started to develope and her waist line is increasing I measured it on Friday and it was 45 cm and today it is 50 cm, and her behaviour has change, she has chilled out, may be its the hot weather but she is normally active in all weathers.
Is there a blood test to see if she is in whelp? instead of another scan, which would be expensive especially if she is not pregnant.
Any other signs of whelp that i should look out for?
thanks
Paul

Re: is she in whelp?
sorry Paul no experience of this but one thing I would say is the cost of breeding should not have any boundaries and whatever the bitch needs she should have , breeding should be done correctly , responsibly and for the good of the breed not the pocket so if its an expensive scan she needs then that is what she should have. If you are not confident in your vet then go to another , I would imagine a half decent vet will look at her and know the signs and can then assess if the scan is worth doing or not

The only thing i know is that they are meant to have about a 1c temperature drop when going into whelp and pups tend to arrive in 24 hours after

The only way to be positive is the scan. There are no blood tests to say whether she's pregnant or not.
I notice that's at least the second litter you've bred this year? If you're breeding so many litters, surely you should have found out about things like this beforehand?

Could be a phantom but it sounds like if her waist is growing so much she could be pregnant. After day 35ish it is hard to see pups on a scan as the amniotic fluid increases a lot. Your vet really should have tried palpitation (feeling) her womb first but again this is difficult to do after day 30. You can do an x-ray closer to the 'due date' to determine if she is pregnant, how many she is carrying, and if done late enough the positioning of the pups. A lot of vets are not good at scanning, they don't do it often and it costs a fortune! Luckily I go to someone who does canine scanning at home and she is very good!
Everyone else is right though if you planned to breed a litter you should have money put down in case anything goes wrong. What would you do in the event of her needing a ceasarian? (sp?)

It isn't just that, Lc. It would seem that this bitch has been bred twice in consecutive seasons. I would be very happy to be proved wrong here.

Hi Caryll,
I don't know where you get your info but this is Crumble's first litter ever.
Hi Nosipho
Thanks for worry about my financial situation but its not a question of not be able to pay for any treatment needed but not wanting to stress a pregnant dog with an unnecessary vet visit and waste money on a test that might be very unreliable.

Boop de doo...
Well does going to the vets usually stress her out? If it does you might be better off just waiting and seeing what happens. However if it is a phantom really you would want to get something to dry up her milk so best to know one way or another! Also for taking time off work for the birth.
Are there other signs is she eating more? although its difficult cus if she was having a phantom then these signs would most likely be present. Do you have a canine scanner locally or someone who scans sheep as they will be more experienced and be able to give you a better idea.

if a b1tch has a phantom in jan and a 1 at there next season would that be normal or a bit of a problem?????
to me if she had a phantom last season and it turns out to be another this time i would be thinking of spaying as im sure phantoms will be very distressing for there girl

Re: is she in whelp?
If it's two phantoms in a row, after mating, then she could well be sterile.
However, she may be pregnant this time. If she isn't, then she isn't. If she is, then in about 3 or 4 weeks she'll have pups. It's probably not necessary to have another scan tbh.
Can I just ask why you're so deperate for her to have pups that you'd mate her immediately after a failed mating?
