reading up at lunch about how many people have died in the heat over the last 6 days and was quite suprised at it being 700+
yet, and does this make me any less human, i wasnt touched or nearly as moved as the following. during a smoke break a lass told me her BF had just called her in tears as he was just walking past a park when a woman came out asking him if he could help her with her dog. it was a 12 year old choc lab and had just died in the park and she couldnt carry it home. of course he helped but what hit him was that he has the same breed dog so it became a lil personal to him. he's a big * bloke who works in a gaurage fitting tyres but it floored him.
when she told me about it i what struck me more than the report on the heat affecting people was the fact that i was more upset about the dog story. i suspect many of you are the same as well.

Jeez that is so sad.

And I can't explain it either - maybe it's the personal touch.

I think the thing is people can make their own choices....put a fan on, have an iced drink etc, but animals are reliant upon us to make choices for them and therefore if someone chooses to walk their dog in the middle of the day/ lock them in a car/ not provide adequate shade etc then there is nothing the dog can do about it. and we all know, even if a dog suffers they will still love their owner unconditionally. in my opinion that's way it tugs at the heartstrings more.

Animals always make me sadder, humans can be so selfish not saying I would want to see anyone die, but animals our in our care...

I think that hits the nail on the head mate, and when our care gives us so much back from them its amazing.
I cant judge the woman though as 12 years with the dog for it to die on her in a park must be awfull , not able to have that personal goodbye in a place of comfort must be heart wrenching. it is prob what she had been doing year in year out for 12 years and now she has lost a dear companion

Thats a shocking number of deaths, which is extreamly sad, but your right about the poor dog, I think unless you own or have ever owned a dog, you will never understand the love and connection between man and dog and for something so tragic to happen it really will pull at your heartstrings. Dog's rely on us to keep them safe, whearas humans have a voice and can look after themselves.
