Staffy crying around other dogs, helppp
Hi i have recently resuced a 7yr old staffy male. He ended up at the shelter as previous owners couldnt give him the time needed as they had a newborn baby aswell. I have had my staffy a little over a month now and we live in a pub. We have taught him that the beer garden isnt just his as we are dog friendly. Since havving him he has attempted to go for a husky that came in, and any other dogs he pulls like crazy to get to them. Only havving him for a short period of time i dont trust him to be off te lead and go and say hello to other dogs, he pulls like mad with all his effort but then when i say 'no' he just sits and crys, however his tail is wagging at the same time. But as i say i just dont trust him to take him over and have a sniff, but surely if he was going to attack he wouldnt cry or wag his tail? Helppp

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
Many things can influence a dogs behaviour as I'm sure you are aware. How much exercise does he get ?, how long are his walks each time and how many per day ?. What food does he have ?
Have you tried using a long training lead with him so he can have a walk about and a good sniff of everything but you can remain in control ?
I guess he would see the other dog visitors to the pub garden as a threat to his territory and would want to defend it, does he have a separate area to play in away from all the other dogs ?

Re: Staffy crying around other dogs, helppp
Hi kathy and rocky, thankyou for quick reply. He gets alot of exercise. 3 to 4 walks a day times vary from 30mins to 1hr. We have an extendable 5m lead for him so he is able to have a sniff and explore. But yes he comes back at the click of a finger. We feed him bakers compllete however i have been informed this isnt good for their stomaches, any food you recomend? He doesnt have his own area of the beer garden as were dog friendly so when hes in th garden with other people and dogs he is on a lead as other customers may be allergic ect. On neutral ground he is great, my mum owns a shitzu and the get on fine. I just cant get my head around why he crys and wags his tail but then has been known to go for other dogs. Theres is no barking or growling. He looks TOO happy to see ither dogs but cant seem to trust him. This may be because i have only been with him a month now but he needs to start sociallising, just no idea where to start?

You are quite right, Bakers food is, to be honest rubbish. I have put a list below of recommended foods, Rocky has Barking Heads which I would recommend, another good one that is easily available is James Wellbeloved and is also reasonably priced.

Maybe Buster just needs a bit more time to settle in with you and feel more at home and confident being with you. Rocky took a little while to settle in with us as he is also a rescue dog.
Do you know any calm dogs like Labradors who you could have a walk with to get Buster socialised a bit. The more he can mix with the better really just keep walks on neutral ground and any introductions done while they are both on the lead calm and under control. I'm sure you will get there.

Thats great il change food right away. And yeah i guess your right. I will keep on sociallising as much as i can with him and maybe after a few more months he will calm down. He has a LOT of energy for a 7yr old, then again that could be the food. Just purchased a clicker aswell so il give that a go and feed treats whenever he is comes into contact with another dog. Maybe then he will see that other dogs could mean rewards

If you do change foods do so gradually to avoid an up set tummy. Just gradually add more of the new food to the old over the course of about a week until you are just feeding the new food. Please let us know how you get on.

Re: Staffy crying around other dogs, helppp
Can I just add that staffords can give quite mixed signals! The crying/whining & tail wagging could either be because he wants to say hello & play, but it could just as easily mean excitement to get to the dog & fight!
The only way you can tell the difference is to socialise as much as possible when you're out on walks. Ask someone with a calm dog to walk along with you, keeping the dogs on the outside of you. Then change & walk one dog on the outside & one between you (as long as things are going alone in a friendly fashion!). If that's ok, try letting them play but keep your dog on a long training lead (you can get quite cheap ones of 50' from ebay) until you're certain it's ok.

An example of a training lead:

Extendable lead:

Hi & welcome to the forum
A great way to get him to start to associate other dogs with good things is to drop a load of treats on the floor for him every time a dog comes into the pub and he notices it. To slow him down a bit you could use something like a kong wobbler to put the treats in.
