Changing food
Ok, so im new to the forum, and collecting my staffie bitch puppy in August. Thing is, the breeders are going to wean the puppies on Pedigree Chum puppy pouches (yuk), and wandering the best way to get her onto dried food once home?
I have always used JWB, and intend to with this one too. All advice appreciated!

Re: Changing food
Simply ease her onto it over a 2 week period so it doesn't upset her tummy

Re: Changing food
Yes, I agree. Let her have the pedigree (yuk, as you say!) for a couple of days so that she can settle in, and then gradually swap over. 10-14 days should be fine for a youngster.

Re: Changing food
I swapped Roman's food from JWB due to him gaining weight quickly and it also having grains in it to Eden dry food. I have put him on Orijen for a few days too whilst I get some more Eden and he hasn't had any issues. His stools are actually better!

It may work for you Rob to chop and change and understand if you've let the food run out you need to replace it , but never what anyone would recommend . Personally I re-order when I have over 2 weeks worth so I don't run out and plus this it is 1 of the reasons I feed Wainwrights , generally can get it cheaper on line most of the time but I can still go to any PAH and buy it off the shelf

Re: Changing food
Probably not recommended Dave you are right but my pup loves the food he is on and he has dropped some of the weight he quickly gained from being on JWB. Maybe I am being naive but Eden and Orijen are pretty similar food sources so I can't see it having a detrimental effect on him.

Re: Changing food
Gradually mix the new food in with the old food over a 10 day period minimum to avoid an upset tummy!

Re: Changing food
Personally i think only a few days is needed to change food in most dogs and that a week or more is not nessessary

Re: Changing food
Thanks everyone. I have heard good things about Wainwrights. Is this considered better than James Wellbeloved? As I noticed that wasnt one of your recommended dried foods?? I agree with pp. I would prefer something that I can walk into a store and buy, as oppose to buying online

Re: Changing food
They are both decent foods at a reasonable price Both seem to be pretty popular with members.

Disagree. The pup is only gonna be what 8-9 weeks old. Better to be safe and do it over a longer period IMO

Re: Changing food
Thanks for the advice. I think i will stick with JWB and change gradually over at least a week.

Some dogs can cope with a quicker changeover, but for a puppy I'd always err on the side of caution as the runs at just 8 or 9 weeks old can be disastrous to a pup's condition.

Re: Changing food
If you have got a deposit on the pup i would personally ask the breeder to start changing now. A respectable breeder woudl not be feeding pedigree...

Re: Changing food
I agree with Hayley, if you deposit, you should have the right to say what your pup is being fed, especially if the food being fed is not one of the best! Let us know how it goes
