Thumbsdown Shock collar

Post by Guest Wed Jul 03 2013, 08:02

We bumped into a gorgeous blue staff/pitbull yesterday and to my surprise it was wearing a shock collar. I asked the guy why he's choosen to use negative reinforcement upon the pooch when any kind of training can do done just as well without shocking a dog. His reply -

"My dog keeps escaping the garden and ended up on a busy road, would you rather shock your dog or it end up dead? My friend is a police dog trainer and they use it so it's ok for me to use it, I want him trained quickly and efficiently and i feel this is the best way to do it. My dogs been in a shelter for 3 months so has never had any recall training so i need to get it sorted out asap so he can walk off the lead wherever i go. Its got 3 settings its only on the middle one so its fine".

I told him to consider fixing his garden up so it's secure

"it costs too much money"

The dog then went to play fight with Shéara and he pulled his dog back and raised his arm, the dog was petrified. He realised he shouldnt have done that in front of me and scarpered pretty quickly. Poor pooch Sad

Unfortunately they're not illegal in England, although they are in Wales.

However. There has been a recent enquiry into the use of shock collars & the findings have just been made public, so hopefully the powers that be will make them illegal in England as well!

I'll try & find the link about the findings.

What a pillock. I wonder what "rescue" let that nut take home a dog, they clearly didn't look into him very well!

I hate shock collars. Even on the lowest setting, they can be dangerous. Fgs, it's an electric shock! Of course it hurts him! Not to mention the damage it's likely to do to his nervous system, as the collar is close to the spinal cord. Also the damage to the thyroid gland!

Thanks for the link Caryll, its given me a little more knowlegde that I can share with him if I see him again!

Its such a shame becasue the dog was so well behaved, it wanted to play and I could interact with the dog no problem so I cant see why he couldnt just take the time and effort and train the dog properly. Pure laziness.

Another person i spoke to today, her dog has issues with people, he's just a little scared and weary of strangers. He was locked in a shed for four months straight so its understandable. Anyway, she was on about getting a shock collar and I managed to talk her out of it phew!

I post on a GSD forum, and every so often someone posts on there about training with a shock or prong collar.angry

They generally get shot down, but it's amazing how many people think they're ok "if they're used properly". Usually the person using one wants instant results so that they can show off how obedient their dog is.Sad

I'm amazed that such a barbaric "training aid" is legal here, and absolutely astonished that PAH stock them.

I think its crazy that PAH sell them, not just one, they have a whole aisle of not so nice training methods...water sprays, noisey things, shock collas and spray collar's. Theres just no need.

They should be illegal here, there was a man prosecuted for using one in Wales but I can't remember the outcome eek

Oh dear Sad what a pr1ck , would far rather have my dogs doing what they are told because they love and respect us even if it takes 10 times as long , and double poor because this dog has obviously already had a bad start in life ending in rescue Crying or Very sad

There was a thread a few months back about shock collars and the effects:

Wish more people would realise what they're doing to the poor dogs is wrong.

I have tried one years ago. Not on a dog but out of curiousity on myself. I managed half way before it hurt allot. But that was only one shock. Shock after shock I can imagine it would hurt on low levels

Good news - the guy has realised the effects of the shock collar and has decided not to use it again!

(We can only hope it's true)
