New baby in the house
My adult daughter lives with us and 9 days ago she gave birth to our first grandchild Gracella We have got 3 staffies all rescues, Polly and Charlie who we have had from pups and the latest Wilf we have only had with us since April when we fostered him from our local RSPCA centre after he became very depressed and upset and started to chew through his own tail, resulting in most of it being amputated Polly is 2 1/2 Charlie is 16 months and Wilf is estimated to be about 20 - 24 months.
We had been a bit apprehensive about the baby with Wilf as we have no history for him and he can be a little OTT and very clumsy at times. We needn't have worried, out of all of the dogs Wilf is totally in love and has become her shadow, Charlie is the clown constantly bringing her toys, and Polly will sit near at feeding times and lick the top of her head or her feet. They have all been amazing right from the first meeting when she was 3 days old x
First group meeting at 3 days old.
Charlie having a little moment
Wilf the guard dog and best friend
Obviously the baby is never left alone in any room with the dogs, and we have always kept very close meetings short before either side gets excited or upset, none of the dogs have ever been pushed away from the baby but they know the Leave command and will step back if too close to her face. The dogs still get all the same amounts of fussing and cuddles and so we have no jealousy, and although Wilf and Polly will try to get between any visitors and "Their baby" we have had no incidents from any of them. Our little fur babies have done us proud and we are very proud of them :-D

Re: New baby in the house
Thanks guys, we are really proud of all of them, and I thought I would share so that anyone who is worried about their dogs and a new baby can see that even more than one dog can be great with a new baby, if introductions are done carefully and controlled, and the dogs are allowed to bond with the baby, allowed to sniff, lick hands, feet (or in Pollys case the top of the baby's head during feeds) If you push your dogs out or away they will be jealous and will resent the baby, likewise the baby will be taught to respect the dogs and will be taught to be gentle and kind to them right from the start Training has to be both ways

Re: New baby in the house
Really glad that you posted this...We are currently expecting our baby in less than 8 weeks! Definitely a concern that we have contemplated. Not sure how our Bella will react or behave, being that she is our "baby". This story and your pics give me some happiness! Thank you!

Re: New baby in the house
Wow~ how adorable....This is a sight for all to see, so very lovely and I'm happy for you and the family!
Would just like to add that remember to make sure the dear pooches know their boundaries. They may stay close, sniff when she's in your arms but there has to be an invisible barrier they must respect at all times, i.e. you should be the one inviting them to get close. They never do mean harm but I'm not sure baby will like it all too well if it gets a heavy licking from well-meaning doggie pals. Fortunately that's as bad as it gets.

Re: New baby in the house
Such lovely photos.....Love the first one, they are all looking as if to say, 'look I am being really good, I will help you look after our new baby'
My friend bought her 7 week old baby to us for a weekend and I was terrified Bailey would jump up or be his boisterous little puppy self, but actually he was as good as gold, just interested more than anything. My friend (baby's mum) wasn't as concerned as me, but I was still a bit nervous lol......
Just the cutest.
