It never rains
It pours. I haven't been on much at all recently cause our internet has died and I have to use my phone.
I took the kids to the vet yesterday cause Sophie has managed to get conjunctivitis and Taco's back paws were looking a bit raw.
We've got an ointment for Sophie's eyes that I get to wrestle in twice a day, but that's fairly straight forward. Taco's paws are what's concerning me the most.
The vet took a look and did a skin scrape and it turns out that he's got juvenile dermodectic mange. The vet gave me a quick explanation of it (it's likely to only affect him during puberty, it's not contagious) but I haven't come across anything like it before. He's on antibiotics twice a day and advocate every two weeks and we've got a medicated shampoo for him but does anyone have any suggestions or tips for dealing with this?
Has anybody come across it before?
Thanks!

Re: It never rains
Thanks mate. Apparently it's something that the pups get from the mum.

Re: It never rains
It can be quite common in terriers, and yes, it's likely that it was passed down from the mother. Dempsey had a little on his head and tail, though it never bothered him and faded quickly.
90% of cases of Demodectic mange actually disappear in a couple of months. Unless it gets a lot worse or starts to cause pain, your best option is probably to follow through on the vet's prescription and see how it turns out.

Re: It never rains
Yes it's common in pups, they get it from their mums and because they don't have a fully developed immune system yet they can't keep the number of mites in check and they have an outbreak. Sometimes it can even clear up on it's own but make sure you follow the advise with the vet. Presumably they have told you to go back for another scrape once you've finished the course of treatment?

Re: It never rains
Thanks everyone! They don't seem to be feeling any worse for wear except for when I have to apply something to them. No, she didn't mention going back for a second scrape but I'll give them a call and make an appointment for one. Just for a bit of extra fun, he's teething as well. Ickle little tyke just can't catch a break this week!
