They're smart as well We taught them to sit, though it's a bit hard to tell if they're actually sitting. Their bellies and short, stubby legs hide it.

Why does everybody love the one who tried to kill my hand?

Herbie tried to kill your hand? Nooooo I don't believe it, he's so cute

He broke my fingers!

My god, how?

He's only a wee tortoise!!

He's the largest breed of mainland tortoise in the world! I was helping somebody with a health check and had to lift his rear end up (easier said than done - the heavy boy!). Herbie decided to move forwards suddenly, so my fingers slipped between his back leg and his shell and got crushed.

Quite proud of how I reacted though! I kept at it and didn't complain until lunch, when I had to go down to the medical unit to get it strapped up. Then I pouted for the rest of the day.

The picture doesn't really show how big he is, but it takes four or five people to lift him. The logs in the background are about 0.75 metres long.
