Hello from Illinois
Hello everyone, Just dropped in to introduce myself and my new addition. Her name is Bebe and she is 10 weeks old, black with some faint brindle markings. She is one of the cutest pups I have ever seen (might be biased). Hope I got the photo share part right. My wife and I are first-time Staffy owners and I am glad I found this group, as I will certainly need it. I have always had dogs but this little girl is definitely different. My experience is with shepherds and retrievers.
This brings up my first question. Bebe is 10 weeks old, adorable as can be and been generally very good. More or less potty trained with little input from us and actually loves her crate. She goes in there with the door left open and plays, naps and just hangs out. Both pleasant surprises to us!!! She is generally well-behaved for her age but a couple times a day is completely bonkers. She will be fine but then suddenly turn into a rabid mongoose. she displays her teeth, lunges, growls, bites, etc. I have been using positive, calm, loving training techniques but she is unable to be controlled at that time. I just have to confine her and walk away. Usually I can sort of flick her hind quarters and say no or roll her over and rub her chest and belly to calm her but at these times, NO WAY. So is this normal for this breed and age? I know she is just a baby. Will she outgrow/learn to control herself? Should I be concerned about dominance type aggression? I have never experienced behavior like this to this extent and am trying to be patient, supportive and loving. We met both of her parents at the breeder's and they are both fantastic dogs. I want all of our lives to be great and don't want to have future issues.
Thanks in advance, Cheers.
Mike, Michele, and Bebe

Re: Hello from Illinois
Hi from the girls and me It sounds like normal puppy behaviour. Just give a firm 'no' if you think it is getting out of hand. They do grow out of it

Re: Hello from Illinois
Hiya! Firstly welcome to the forum from Rocky and I! You have definitely come to the right place being a first time staffy owner, I find it so helpful to be on here, everyone is great, I find myself sitting on here for hours sometimes just reading through things!
Rocky is now 5 months, but when he was around the 10 week mark he was extremely naughty, consistency and patience is the key as I found he did grow out of it, much more obedient now, although still tends to muck up, its all in the name of fun
Bebe is absolutely gorgeous! Good luck

Hi and welcome to the forum from Chiquito and I
All sounds like normal puppy behaviour to me! The noises they make during these 'manic play times' can seem quite scary (especially when they show their teeth and growl) however it is not aggression (healthy 10 week old pups do not show aggression!!), she is just playing with you
Why don't you make a post in the puppy chat section (follow the link below) ... it is the best place to ask for questions and receive advice/information from others (this section is for introductions so people will usually only post one reply )

Re: Hello from Illinois
Hi and welcome from me and Gwen! Stafford are def a little more headstrong than other breeds! This is completely normal behavior! Gwen was exactly the same at this age! It is in no way aggressive! Bebe just wants to play and doesn't understand yet that this is too rough and that playing this way is not acceptable behavior! You will need to teach her this!
Every time she does this say no firmly and turn your back and completely ignore her for a minute or so. If she still continues when you do this pick her up quickly and calmly and put her into another room for a time out for 2 or 3 minutes (make sure it's a room that is puppy safe like the bathroom or laundry room). Let her out and if she's calmed down give her quiet calm praise. If she continues to nip and growl pick her back up and put her into the other room again for a few minutes.
You must be very consistent and do this every single time! If you do she will catch on fairly quick once she realizes this behavior means the play ends! It will take time and a lot of patience from you. Everyone in the house must be on the same page and do the same thing! I know it can be frustrating, Gwen would really hurt us and she took a little longer than most to really get it. She is now 6 months and still has times when she gets really excited and loses control but it's rare! Good luck and congrats on your new addition!!!

Re: Hello from Illinois
Thanks to everyone for the welcomes. I am glad to hear the encouraging feedback. I have noticed a slight improvement already. She learns so quickly. She got to meet my parents 13 year old Lab today and emulated her behavior almost immediately. I will post pics tomorrow when I get home.
Thanks again, Cheers
