Bella, amateaur emotional health service dog, friends, and Laurel (humble walker and feeder of terrorbulls)
Hello,
The short of it:
Me: Laurel
Pup: Bella Dona (Crazy Daisy Chain Samantha) - definitely bull terrier, deffinitely blacklab, and maybe some hunting dog- about 3 yo, spayed female foster - amateur emotional health service dog
Others:
Poppy (Bella's roommate/ favorite female pack mate Terrier/redheeler? rescued as pup)
Shockoe (Male blue brindle rescued as pup, Bella's favorite male in North Carolina- he is very handsome)
Hercules (Male mastiff/pitt? mix, 150+ lbs, rescued as adult, sweet and HUGE, Bella's favorite boy in Colorado)
I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Laurel, and my foster dog is named Bella Dona (Crazy) Daisy (Chain) Samanatha. She has 100% the terrorbull temperament. She's cuddly, kissey, hard headed, and great with kids, adults, and dogs. For short, she's Bella or Bella Dona. (Yes, I know it's Morning Glory and Deadly Nightshade - she earned the name.) She's likely a pit-hunting dog (lab-beagle-hound?) mix (they all are where she was rescued).
She was given to a local rescue, and I'm her third foster. I was regularly dog sitting Shockoe (a gorgeous male blue brindle rescued as a pup, wonderfully behaved) and Molly (a terribly behaved lab-pit). A man admiring Molly, suggested I adopt Freeway (a blue eyed- brown lab-pit 14 wk old pup). In our area, they are careful who they adopt pit-mixes out to, because fighting can still be a problem, and the man offered to put in a good word for me as I had experience working with them.
I was told about a particular pup lab-pit-mix, but when I called, the pup was gone, and the rescue lady was worried about what to do with Samantha (at the time). She was actually afraid she'd have to be put down. Naturally, I told her she could do whatever she wanted with Samantha, I wanted a puppy... Just kidding, I have experience with "difficult" dogs, and Bella and I have been working together for about 1 month. Bella's great for me, because my husband was emotionally abusive and became threatening when I left, so Bella helps me have compassion for myself. It's much easier to show compassion to an animal, and no one would ever suggest it was Bella's fault her owner hit her.
Bella is only about 30 lbs, black, and built like an English Staffordshire Bull Terrier. She's got webbed feet, a little longer snout, is overly interested in birds of all kind (and always tries to get me to shoot them so we can have dinner) and loves water, so she's probably got a little bit of (English?) Black Labrador Retriever in her. She also occasionally makes a terrible hound/bugling noise, so she may have something else. She was born in eastern North Carolina, USA/Myrtle Beach area, so all of our rescues are pit-lab-hunting dog mixes of some variety.
After meeting Shockoe and Molly and noticing how they help with my PTSD symptoms, I realized a dog could be a huge help. Also, I have variable dog allergies (labs and poodles are bad), but Shockoe and Molly were not a problem. I grew up with a Spitz, and I realized that I needed a guard-type dog rather than a watchdog. So, a pit mix rescue was a logical choice. The more I learn, the more I realize that these are wonderful, gentle, amazing dogs that are terribly misunderstood.
That's the long and the short of it. I'm interested in getting involved with Pit rescues (online media and fundraising through sale of collars, art, etc), hopefully fostering more when I have the space, and learning more about the breed and their pack mates.
If you read all of this, congrats, if not, I don't blame you.
