Hey guys
I'm Sharon and I have a 7 year old staffie called Alfie who I love unconditionally and he is a fantastic member of the family. He is so soppy and loves his cuddles and having his belly rubbed. Would love some pointers on weight control as he is a little over weight ( like his owner! ). I hope to get to know you and make many new friends, canine or not. Speak to you soon.

Re: Hey guys
I used to feed Alfie pedigree chum however he went off it. I am now trying bakers weight control which is dry however he does tend to eat it eventually. I walk him twice a day for about 20 minutes as he has had a bad back leg. Is this right...

Re: Hey guys
Bakers is rubbish , way too many additives you need to move to something of better quality . One of our mods is feeding her older girl on Wainwrights lite from Pets at Home and seems to think it is doing the trick ( I feed my 2 both normal wainwrights)
Regarding the exercise then that is something you have to judge better yourself , what happens if you go for longer walks, did the vet advise you this ?? Maybe you can slot 1 or 2 more short walks in and see how he handles this.
Is the poorly leg a permanent thing or just a condition at the moment

Re: Hey guys
Thanks Dave, will pop along and try wainwright s and see what happens. Alfie pulled a muscle in his back right leg and had a week of antibiotics and I am building his walking up gradually. It appears if I walk him for too long then about an hour later Alfie starts to hold his leg up. I do massage it for him and this appears to work most of the time.

Re: Hey guys
I agree about the Wainwrights! Definitely a good idea.
Sounds like you're doing the right thing for his leg as well. If his exercise is built up too quickly, he could strain his injury again and make it worse. It's normal for a dog to put on a little weight if his exercise has to be reduced due to an injury. You could try reducing his portions slightly until his exercise routine is back to normal.
Also, is there anywhere near you for swimming? Rivers, lakes, etc.? Swimming is very good exercise for dogs with leg injuries, as it doesn't put too much pressure on the injury and still allows them to keep fit.
