Re: HELP
You say you leave him in the room alone, do you get up and leave or do you take the pup out of the room?

Re: HELP
Yeah I was confused for a bit, then I realised what the 14 meant - 7 human years for every one year of dog's life! (That's not terribly accurate btw Sophie).

Re: HELP
Ok, we've got the age sorted out - he's 2 years old and he's been "moaning" since you got him at 11 weeks old. Is it just whining, or more than that eg yapping? And do you shut him another room every time he moans/whines/yaps?

Re: HELP
i do leave him in the kitchen when he moans but i can guarantee that instead of the moaning the bin will be all over the floor so i stopped leaving him in the kitchen after 2 weeks and i started to put him in the bed room and i still herd him it drives me crazy because i dont know why he is moaning all the time even when my partner goes out or i do he moans and when you tell him no he carries on its like he is ignoring me soo then i have to shout at him and i feel very nasty for shouting at him and sorry for getting you confused about rockys age it confused me two

Re: HELP
Delicate question Sophie, but do you give Rocky enough "me time" and exercise? He's still young with bags of energy, and Staffs are very loving dogs who like a lot of human interaction, and it could be he is asking for a bit more of one or other.
Or, if he only does it when you and partner "interacting" between yourselves, it could be that he's just jealous! (I had that problem myself with a previous dog).

Re: HELP
As Lynda said, he might be looking for some interaction with you if he isn't getting enough.
Have you noticed any patterns in the whining? For instance, does it usually happen inbetween walks? Or when he hasn't been played with for a while?

Re: HELP
Unfortunately he may have learned this behaviour because of that. treating a dog for being quiet works great, but they catch on that whining means you will tell them to be quiet then they get a treat!
With this type of thing the best thing i can recommend is totally ignoring him when he whines. Turn away, don't look at him, don't even breathe loudly. Sit with arms folded and legs crossed, if he gets up onto the sofa, stand up and turn away until he is not interested anymore. when he is quiet you can give him a small stroke and a quiet low energy good boy then right back to watchign telly or doing what you are doing. if he is still quiet and relaxed you can start giving him a nice massage (nice and calm and relaxed not a rough em up snogging session) do this enough and he will learn that quiet is nice. leave fun and excitement to outside!

Re: HELP
Maisey has always moaned. In fact we call her moaning Mertle. Most of the time it is endearing but some times so very annoying. When she is moaning, I completely ignore her and after a while she stops. I think it is part of her make-up as there really is no reason for her to moan at all. Not much help, sorry, but as Hayley said, the only real way to deal with it is to ignore the behaviour completely, how ever hard that may be

Re: HELP
thanks for comments sometimes i can't hear him because i'm partially deaf so my partner has to say no and he gets annoyed with telling him rocky dus stop at times when hes eating and sleeping and playing with rambo but its mainly when where watching soaps or t.v. i did know that it's common for staffs to whine but i didn't think it was that bad especially when i take him for a walk he still whines and sometimes puts me in a position when were in front of people because i don't want them to think i hurt my dog witch i would never do if you get me

Re: HELP
Excellent advice from Hayley.
A word of warning - the whining is now a 'learned' behaviour & as such will take a bit longer to 'unlearn'. Have patience & persevere & I'm sure it'll go right!
