There's a debate on other forums regarding the KC concidering registration of cross breeds.
The following is from the KCs recent annual meeting:

Pat Brigden asked whether the KC was going to open the registry to crossbreeds, such as labradoodles.

"Because if this is the case we feel it would be a terrible step backwards," she said. "The KC was formed and must continue to be a place where registrations confirm the purity of the breed. If the registry was open to crossbreeds it would be very, very unfortunate because people breeding these aberrations would be able to advertise the puppies as KC-registered. It would encourage sales and disappoint buyers.

"Is this your intention there should be wide consultations, not only among KC members but all people involved in breeding."

Chairman Steve Dean said the matter was 'in the air'.

"If people out there are determined to breed crossbreeds – such as one of our major Assured Breeders Guide Dogs for the Blind – and they apply the necessary health tests the KC will have to answer the question whether it should help these people or turn their back on them.

"The debate is only just beginning. We would suggest that there would not be an open pedigree registry but in some other way, but there is much to be done to help people if they wish to breed crossbreeds and it would be foolish not to discuss whether there is a role for us to help them breed healthier dogs.

Just found this:

MAY 2013

'We have recently been contacted by a Labrador breeder who wanted us to add the Labradoodle to the breed listings on Champdogs because they had been approached by the Kennel Club to become, in her words, "The 2nd KC breeder for their first cross-breed (Labradoodle)".

The breeder in question, who has only so far bred KC registered Labradors went on to explain, during a visit in January, she had been encouraged by a Kennel Club representative to start breeding Labradoodles.

The representative explained to the breeder :

"There was a huge demand for Labradoodles and currently only one UK KC breeder".

and

"The Labradoodle is the first cross-breed the KC are supporting in order to prevent the high demand being produced outside of KC regulations. The Kennel Club want it done decently and correctly because they appreciate that there is a demand for certain cross breeds and that the breeders need to be monitored and supported."

As Champdogs only lists KC and FCI recognised breeds we have not added the breed to our lists but will certainly watch developments with interest' - quote Champdogs.

I don't like the fact that someone can own a lab and own a poodle, cross them and have a pedigree dog! Absolutely NO!

If they have strict guidlines and it is a labradoodle being bred to a labradoodle then it is different. but they can't then start breeding a labradoodle to a lab or a poodle and still have a pedigree. Pedigree is two parents of the same breed!.

No dogs started out being different breeds, they had to be crossed with dogs of desired traits to get to a point where they had a specific breed with specific traits/characteristics, right? So what's the big deal? I think at the beginning it'd need to be a Labrador to a Poodle, but after that, you could breed a Labradoodle to a Labradoodle, and then it would be a proper breed. I don't see why it's been OK for new dog breeds to have come about, but now no-one wants it to continue. If everyone had that attitude, dog breeds wouldn't exist, it'd just me a mess of mongrels.

I agree that a pedegree has to be from two parents of the same breed, if they decide to recongnise a new breed then breeding two of that breed can prodice a pedegree dog.
