why so much hate......
I have always had bully breeds in my life as they make such lovely family pets and I have never had a problem with any of my boys until now..... I had a staff cross but sadly he died of cancer a few years ago, with only having my 15 year old lurcher in the house the day times were very quiet, So I decided to get another Staffordshire bull, He is called Ollie I have had him since 12 week old he is a very quiet boy was the runt of the litter. He is now over a year old and is starting to enjoy the long walks and the school pick up time and has finally come out of his shell, I just have 1 problem other dogs HATE him, every single dog at my daughters school has either snapped, barked or actually gone for him and bit him. He has never retaliated, growled or raised a lip to any of them. This is the first Male I haven't got nutered and I am wondering if this has anything to do with it as all 4 of my other boys never had any problems. I'm really worried that It's my dog that is causing the problems, It's upsetting to see this as he hasn't a bad bone in his body.
Any Info or advice would be grateful.

Re: why so much hate......
Welcome he looks lovely, feel free to post pics of him
Hmm...if it's all the time, it does sound like he might be the cause of any problems, but if it was something big, you'd probably know. Are the dogs you come across OK with other dogs, or are they like that with your other dog too?

All the dogs he comes in to contact with are usually fine with other dogs, even today one of the ladies said "I've never seen my dog do that, he has never bit any dog before"
I just don't know what to do about it, I'm just glad my boy doesn't retaliate... but there is only so much one dog can take before he snaps back and I really don't want this to happen.

Maybe you could try a consultation with a good behaviourist , maybe they can just spot something that you can't . Based on the evidence in front of you and what everyone else is telling you it seems like you're poor little fella is doing something wrong but neither of you know what it is

Re: why so much hate......
had a massive break through this evening, nice long walk in the woods and he encountered 3 dogs and none of them growled, barked or snapped at him. one spaniel even had a play with him the only difference today is that I actually let him off the lead and let him run free, A little progress but I feel better than I did yesterday

Re: why so much hate......
Maybe he's picking up on some energy of yours/other people at the school gates? Do you feel stressed there? Best thing you can do is build your own confidence and know that you, your dog and your family will get through this. It will be fine. Try not to panic when it happens. Also, it's not on that dogs bite! Stay confident, in control and loving to your dog and I'm sure you will start understanding what is going on. How does he compare to a lurcher? I've always been interested to know...

Re: why so much hate......
That is very encouraging news Lou, and it seems that the clue is that Ollie was off-lead.
Obviously you can't have Ollie off-lead all of the time, so as Dave suggests, a behaviourist might be able to spot if Ollie is giving any "keep-off" signals whilst he's on the lead. Some dogs (well, quite a lot in my experience) do feel vulnerable when on the lead and give off vibes to other dogs and some vibes are more obvious to us humans than others.
I do wish you the best of luck in getting to bottom of this problem and finding a way out of it - please let us know how you and Ollie progress ><

Re: why so much hate......
Hi, just want to say you not alone in this. My Deebo is the same. Most of the dogs we meet on walk want to bite him etc. But only when he's on the lead. When off the lead they will play with my boy. Someone said it might be his posture. As a bull type his approach is tall ,head up,chest upfront. Some dogs can read this wrong.

Re: why so much hate......
I think staffs bodies are physically different to any other dog so their stance can just seem aggressive to others. That's my theory anyway lol

Re: why so much hate......
That big smile of his is wonderful! ><
I am lucky in that Charlie seems to be liked by 90% of dogs, his rescue and foster people did a very good job of socialising him and he seems to get doggy body language. Sounds like Ollie would love to play, so I hope that things continue to improve.
I've spoken to several people with less friendly dogs while on our walkies and a few have said to me that their dogs don't like other dogs if the other dog is on a lead, but once off the lead they are happier. Perhaps the pulling on the lead does give them a more "grrr" posture?
Another lady has a dog who doesn't like entire males. She has to have a discreet peep at the other dog's undercarriage before deciding whether they will get along!

Re: why so much hate......
Welcome and what a great looking boy! Glad there was progress. I have no idea but glad it hasn't happened to me though. Monte doesn't put up with any dog behaving aggressive to him even though he is super dog-friendly. If one goes for him he stands his ground. Frosty (my other male) sounds more like yours as he wouldn't retaliate either. I think you have a very well tempered dog there by the sound of it. He just needs more good experiences and to stay away from those other dogs at pickup! Could be that in a loud and rambunctious environment, other dog breeds can be more on edge. Such a great thing that Staffs in general are very stable.

The Lurcher was my ex husbands, and as I have always had bull breeds in my home the Lurcher was the best dog I ever had lol. but they just don't have the same character as a staff I like the cheekiness they have
bit more progress at school gates yesterday but nothing major. he needs to stop rearing up on his back legs like a horse... I think it may scare some of the dogs down there lol

ah - you didn't tell us about rearing up on his back legs (he thinks he's a horse!). Sounds all good. I am certain that now that he knows you want to see change, he will do everything to please you and make things better.
Is it really true that other dogs aren't as funny as Staffs? It is music to my ears, of course...

Re: why so much hate......
Oh, the rearing up on the back legs like a horse! Kuchar does this too, but only when on the lead. His paws come up beside his ears, he's just wanting to play and he looks so cute from my end of the lead but I do realise that some people and/or dogs might see it differently.

Re: why so much hate......
He is still young & knows no different but if other dogs continue to have a go especially when he's coming up to 2 years old he WILL retaliate at some stage , as scary as it is he will then relise he's not a push over but hopefully with plenty of socialising he will continue to be good with other dogs & other dogs won't be so quick to have a go at him & respect him.
My old dog was very similar & I know of other Staffy owners that encountered a similar thing to you, but it will pass & I believe it's just part of them growing up.
The picture is fantastic & we can all see that he has the right foundations to be a dog anyone would be proud of
