Presa Carnario
These dogs look INTENSE! Bred for working with Cattle of the coast of spain in the early 1900s
Weirdly it doesn't seem to be on the UK banned list which is a tad worrying! but I'll stick with my Staff!
What are you favorite out-of-the-ordinary dog breeds? (And im sure this has been asked a million times)

Re: Presa Carnario
I just can't imagine how powerful they could be in the wrong hands! Staffs get it bad enough for being brought up wrong, imagine one of these! I definitely wouldn't have the balls to put my foot down if it came to it!
I agree though , it is a beautiful dog, and a stunning example of the breed!

In my area most staffs are a status symbol, bought to show off power, used to protect them in fights and be aggressive to others. They are badly treated, abused making them unpredictable and vicious, I couldn't imagine what it would be like if some of the pikeys were to get a Preso Carnario!
As always its the minority that have to ruin it for the majority!

Re: Presa Carnario
Loki's half Presa Canario. Only thing he got from it was the colour and eye colour from his dad though, his temperament is 100% Staff, he's an absolute friendly, lovable wimp . Definitely lovely dogs but terrible in the wrong hands, a breed for experienced large breed dog owners, for sure.

I was at a farm yesterday where the farmer has a MASSIVE warning sign in red to warn people not to leave their vehicle as his dog WILL attack you.
He has a Border Collie, which is unbelievably aggressive.
I wouldn't be afraid of a Presa any more than any other breed if I'm honest.

Strangely Andy this dog yesterday attacked my vehicle too!

My brother also bit badly on the leg by a collie, and also bit another neighbour who had to have skin graphs it was that bad. Hence He is very wary of them now!

Re: Presa Carnario
I'm going a bit off topic I guess but at the same time I'm saying don't be fooled by big muscly dogs being dangerous.
There was a story in The Sun newspaper (I bet a lot of you saw it) about a girl who had been seriously attacked/disfigured by a dog attack in a back garden.
The story was flooded with pics of staffs looking mean etc. I read it and about 4-5 paragraphs down it said "the dog which was a Border Collie..."
Basically, if they had put pictures of Collies herding sheep the story wouldn't have had the same impact.
It's all scaremongering, for the most part these dogs are all absolutely excellent.

They are a gorgeous powerful looking dog which sadly means they would be attracted to the half wits. We all know what that means.

Re: Presa Carnario
All dogs can be aggressive and cause damage, definitely, but I think what's meant is that the huge, powerful dogs can do more damage. An aggressive Chihuahua is unlikely to hurt you as much as an equally aggressive Presa Canario. So I think that's what's meant.

He's now breaking the law by having an uncontrolled, aggressive dog on his premises.
Not that that'll bother him.

Re: Presa Carnario
im with the others that say i would be no more scared by a Presa Canario than any other breed infact the only breed im a little weary of is the GSD for a couple of reasons .
my mates american bulldog looks scarey and he very powerfull but he is the softest big lump you could ever come across .
tyson at about 12 months he a lot bigger and muscled now
he has almost knocked me off my feet a few times when he has come to greet me with a kiss

Re: Presa Carnario
The dog in the first post is far more muscular than Presas tend to be. This is far more representative of the breed:

Re: Presa Carnario
I'm wary of certain dogs, but not really any breed. There's a G Retriever that tries for Logan everytime they see each other and when it can't get him it'll try for me. My uncles GSD is the epitome of "dangerous dog", it simply wants everything dead.
Then a few dogs I know from walks I know to stay away from.

This is what I meant! and also there was a Collie on the horse yard near me alongside a Rottweiler, the rotty was aggressive before you come in the gate but afterwards was the soppiest thing, however the collie used to hang back and bark viciously winding the rotty up again, was a proper struggle to get them both calmed down so you could get on!
Now the collie has gone The rotty is perfectly pleasant!
And Warren and Chris they are beautiful dogs! If I had the space and the experience I would love one, but like I said in one of my posts, I don't think at the moment I would have the balls to use negative reinforcement if the situation arose!
Going off topic, but my family has always had dogs, and I've looked after many but never had to be a full part of the training process, we're trying to use positive reinforcement as much as possible by ignoring Jay and not validating bad behavior with any attention and praising him when he does the right thing, but what situations would you consider worthy of a tap on the snoz?

Short answer fella, none!
These things only make a dog hand shy and subsequently a lot worse.
My Logan is a big dog but he can be kept under control with patience and the right tone of voice.
If anyone was to tap him on the nose they'd end up with a broken arm...and it wouldn't be from Logan

Re: Presa Carnario
None. Although it won't physically hurt them, they're sensitive souls a tap on the nose can either make them think you're playing, or make them wary of you in the future, weaken the bond between you, etc.
For the record, just because the dog is a large breed and powerful and needs an experienced owner, doesn't mean it needs any negative or harsher methods. You can train any dog, big or small, to be very well-behaved with nothing but positive training methods

I did think that would be your response and it's always good to know! we did a lot of research before adopting this little fella and that was the overall tone of all of the stuff we were reading!

Just take your time with him and eventually it'll click. My fella was an absolute nightmare at a time but he is now the most gentle and easy to look after dog I could possibly ask for
