Angelina Jolie Double Mastectomy
The full story below, she had an 87% risk of breast cancer which has now been reduced to 5% she also has a 50% risk of ovarian cancer. Drastic measures taken by her and very bravely:

Wow, that must always be a difficult choice to make loads of respect to her for that, and I think it might help loads of other women in a similar position.

Re: Angelina Jolie Double Mastectomy
Very brave woman but a no brainer really 87% is a very high percentage. I would have no doubts at all.

Re: Angelina Jolie Double Mastectomy
I would totally do this if i had the money to. My grandmother died of breast cancer and i don't see any use for my boobs (truthfully i would like them away and redone!)
A hysterectomy would be a harder decision. I don't want kids, now, but i would want the option.

Re: Angelina Jolie Double Mastectomy
She never even texted me to ask if it was alright
But joking aside even though it makes sense still not an easy thing to do

Re: Angelina Jolie Double Mastectomy
I think the reason she made it public is to give strength to women who are considering having it done.
And Steve, if a woman is at high risk of breast cancer the NHS will do a double mastectomy.

TBH if I keep putting weight on I might be putting my own name down for one soon

Re: Angelina Jolie Double Mastectomy
Why when as Caryll said in those circumstances the NHS would do it.

If you are at high risk (ie mum or grandmother had breast cancer) then you can get a mastectomy done on the NHS. But women don't do it because they're scared of how they'll look, and how they'll be seen afterwards.

Thing is, there will always be people with more money than the rest. That doesn't make them bad people. The way they behave is what determines their character.

Actually, Steve, when my mum had a mastectomy because of cancer she was offered an implant to 'even things up'. She turned it down because she wasn't bothered about it, but many women walking around today have had mastectomies & implants on the NHS.
Unless you've been personally involved you're unlikely to have heard about it.

Re: Angelina Jolie Double Mastectomy
i dont think they will give you mastectomies becasuse some point in the future you may or may not get breast canser
Re: Angelina Jolie Double Mastectomy
They will, Steve.
But only if your past history of breast cancer in the family warrants it. You're also given counselling beforehand.

A friend of a friend has just had the same thing & implants on the NHS because she had the BRCA1 gene. She's awaiting a full hysterectomy too
