Heya from Adelaide
Hello from Down Under, Adelaide, South Australia. I found this website when researching puppy info for our new pup and was blown away by the Staffy specifics of the forums!
We have just brought home 7 week old 'Bella' an English Staffordshire Terrier. I didn't want to bring her home until at least 8 weeks but she and her littermates needed to be separated from the mother as she has a serious womb infection after the birth and needs de-sexing ASAP and whilst lactating she is unable to do that.
We loves Staffy's and their infectious grins - we also know that she is going to be handful and want to train her right from the beginning. Previously we have a rescue dog, (Staffy x Beagle - Steagle ) and my OH has had staff's and other breeds all his life. Our Steagle came with her fair share of issues but I've never owned a puppy and not sure how to begin the boundary setting/training. How long will it take her to understand her name? It 's hard to say 'Bella...sit' when she doesn't know her name. How do I approach the training with a puppy who completely ignores the words coming from my mouth? We haven't done much to be honest - it's been less than 24 hours since we got her.
Does anyone recommend any techniques for bonding and training in the first couple of weeks - we have lined up puppy training from 12-22 weeks with a puppy trainer but want some techniques until then. We can't take her out of the house until her final jabs at about 12 weeks so need some ideas for the backyard and in the house until then. Some of the things that our Steagle was taught:
1. Not allowed in the kitchen (trained with the Bah technique)
2. Had to sit before being asked to come inside
3. Sit calmly as I give her dinner until I give her permission.
These are just a few things and I realise that I would be expecting too much if I were to ask Bella to do these things right now but I would like to work towards that sooner rather than later. I think the thing I'm struggling to grasp is - how do we teach the dog to associate the command with the action? I'm not super keen on treat training but like to offer praise during training and than perhaps a food treat to conclude the training.
Any suggestions for a new pup owner???

Hi and welcome from Me n Steffi
The most important part of their training in my opinion is consistency.. Pick a good training technique and stick to it.. Also don't expect too much too soon. Start with sit and stay commands then work up to more complicated ones. If you don't like to use treats to train then be prepared to be embarrassed And get use to lots of crazy praise Staffies respond really well to praise.. To teach my girl to toilet outside got quite a few odd stares from the neighbours Every time she would go toilet outside i would act like a complete twit, praising her in a high pitched baby voice But it worked very quickly..
Have a read through some of these links, hopefully they will help

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
Have a good look around the forum and ask as many questions as you like in the relevant section.
The most important things to remember are lots of love, time, patience and consistency with the training.

Re: Heya from Adelaide
Welcome why don't you want to use treats? Praise can work, but treats work much better for most dogs. You decrease and then stop the treats when the behaviour is known, but for motivating the dog, it's a great way to do it. The links Kylie sent should help. For getting her used to her name, just say it as much as possible whilst praising her.

Hi and welcome from Chiquito and I
As Tara said above, the more you use her name the faster she will get used to it .. the same goes for the training. Chiquito picked up sit waiting for his food within a couple of days ... just be consistent with what you want her to do from day one and she will work out the actions pretty quickly, they are pretty fast learners
I use a combination of treats, toys/games and praise for training rewards - I do always find that the food is a good motivator for learning new things though ... there's plenty of healthy options available if you prefer these.

Re: Heya from Adelaide
Thanks for the welcome and replied re: training! I will post all future questions to the relevant sections! Haven't yet worked out to individually reply so to:
Tara thanks for your advice - I naively thought that if you started with treats for training that would be the norm but I am comforted by the fact that I can faze them out when the behaviour is well taught!
Thanks Kylie for the encouragement and the links - I had already read them before we got pup Yes I'll try with treats now but I love a good 'high pitched voice' and not embarrassed to go crazy happy lady when she makes a potty in the right place!! I got a few sits on command yesterday - She is a lovely little thing and the biggest softy. Already well established herself as a big fan of the belly rub!!
