Hello
Hello, I have just found you via facebook so am looking forward to finding my way around. I have 2 dogs, one is a staffy/lurcher cross (7 years) and a staffy (3 years). Both are rescue dogs. We have had the staffy for almost 2 years now and I had 3 months of a personal trainer to help me with some of the issues that can come with a rescue dog (and to help with my confidence in owning a staffy!). Skip now knows a few basic commands (when he wants to listen) but still pulls dreadfully on his walk. I have tried almost every collar and lead combo (except the punishment ones) and many strategies given to me by the trainer. Still can be a nightmare on his walk - anyone else managed to crack this?
Also as a PS - any advice on what toys to buy that don't end up pulverised within 10 minutes? Kong seem to be the best but still not immune.
Thanks again and looking forward to interacting with you and hearing about your own staffy :-)
Angela

Re: Hello
Welcome I can't help with the pulling (but I know the Canny Collar comes highly recommended if you haven't tried that), but for toys, I'd suggest a Boomer Ball, they can't be picked up if you get the right size, so they can't really be destroyed. StagBars are great too, but for chewing rather than playing, but they last ages.

Re: Hello
Hello and welcome from me and Ebony! She's a fellow rescue dog, and congrats on your two rescues too! All dogs in our care at the center are walked on Check Chains otherwise known as Choker Chains (just for practicality really so we don't have to harness and collar up every dog we walk ), Ebony was a nightmare for pulling but I trained her out of that on her walks using her Check Chain, they're very effective if used, and placed on correctly! I suppose using a normal collar ect would do the trick too, just by giving them a quick tug and saying no every time they start to pull; if they start to pull a bit you can say no, see if that stops their pulling if not tug them and say no; if it still doesn't work make them sit. Normally if my girl gets a bit excited and the slack in her lead starts to tense up I say "ah ah" and she'll calm down, sometimes I make a "Pshh" noise to break her attention and to calm her down a bit too as she generally only pulls if she locks onto something can be a bit tedious but it sure worked with my girl Teaching your pooch to heal walk early on is also a good way to get them to stop pulling! In show rings I know the cook liver and cut it up into small pieces and clip it onto their belt so the dog is next to them focused on the bag, then they reward them for staying close - that's not how I trained my girl to heal but I know others do, so maybe try that? It might just be because he's super excited so you could cut down the length of the walk, and give him smaller walks throughout the day to calm him down? Eventually he will get better, it just takes a lot of time!
Sorry for the massive waffle I hope this helped somewhat!
