Van broke down
Driving my van yesterday to a job and the engine just stopped. Got my bro in law to try some jump leads but that wasn't the problem. Towed it to the garage I use and opened fuel pipe turned it over and no fuel coming through. So thought probbaly fuel pump, no problem £100 tops to get sorted. Phoned a few motor part shops to see who has one and they all said they don't have them. So phoned Vauxhall and they said my model doesn't have a fuel pump only main injection pump and they are £1,100 + vat
Still waiting for garage to get back to me but fingers and paws crossed for me that it's something else that won't cost that much. Van is only worth £1,500. Hate being self employed sometimes

Re: Van broke down
That sucks If it will cost more than 20% of what the van is worth I'd just get a different one espically with an engine problem

Tell me about it Janey
Only hope I have J if it is that is to phone scrap yard and hope they don't realise the true value of them. Has happened in past. Like ask for £100 for the part then it may be worth the risk

Re: Van broke down
I've gotten some great deals from junk yards before. If you are mechanically inclined the do it yourself routine is great. I'm great on pre 2000 models but anything after that I'm about useless

Might have to train Blue up with weight pulling. Then I can buy a cart and get him to carry my tools from job to job

I think that may well be more reliable Mike, what's the insurance like on one
One thing I love about Land Rovers they are still quite easy to repair.

This is a duel model. It enable the woman to drive down the correct roads and enables the man to park it up without swapping seats

Re: Van broke down
Straight to the breakers yard fella, esp for an older van.
There'll be loads of them sitting written off in breakers which you'll buy the whole unit for next to nowt.

PS
if you do end up scrapping it ask them to put it at the top of the pile so you get some free advertising

Not a bad idea
Still no word from the garage
But I walked 2 miles to work today and it payed off. Guy doing the pebble dashing on the house I was working at over heard me talking and said I can get the part for you. Phoned his mate who works for a big local parts company and said tell him what part you need. I told him and he said no problem since your a mate of Nicks (Pebble Dasher) you can have it for cost £240
So when the lazy sods at the garage stop reading the paper and look at the van and if they tell me it is that part I can get it at a decent price.

Re: Van broke down
Astra 1.7 cdi 53 plate, no fuel pump just main injection. Turning over just not starting, driving pervectly then engine just stopped. Turning over but not starting, opened fuel line and no fuel coming through

Re: Van broke down
pumps arnt a common fault, only possibles i can think of
-fuel filter (knackered seals will draw air, no fuel will get to engine)
-pump (you'd have noticed a decrease in performance/starting if it was worn out, else its complete failure)
-pump ECU (quite common, can be repired by several companies)
whatever it boils down to, most parts on that car are repairable by specialists, for not a great deal of money. i would highly recommend Diesel Bob in Preston, ive had numerous parts rebuilt/recoded by him,
http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/
if its the ECU then thru work we use a company called ECU Testing, great value, but their turnaround is about 6 working days at the minute

Funny you should say about ECU as that went 8 months ago. Not main ECU some smaller one had a dodgy solder point. Maybe thats knackered it up again. Thanks I'll mention it to garage and see what they say. Well I will when they answer the bloody phone

I can probably manage that

Re: Van broke down
Nice one James today found out it is the ECU which controls the fuel. They put one in off another astra and it started straight away.

Nice one cheers Wazza. Mine is cooked beyond repair but £140 is still a good price. Then normally about £220. Gonna see how much from scrap yard to see if worth just getting one of the for now as I can pick that up tomorrow and have van straight back.
