hello everyone.

i need help as i have a 12 year old staff called bevis (was a rescue and already named). he has started to pant and shake a lot for no reason at all. he is a bit on the round side (mostly since i had a baby and she feeds him her food now) but still has walks and runs round like a puppy. he also holds one of his paws up when he starts and there is nothing i can do to stop him. i wasn't sure if it was because he was in pain???? confused have checked his paw and nothing in there. think he is a bit hard of sight as one eye is going cloudy and is stiff in back legs in cold weather. haven't taken him to vets yet as he does like going and gets himself in a sate. any ideas anyone????

if it helps he started doing it when i was pregnant but stopped for a while and started again now. no im not pregnant again.

cheers Smile

Hi and welcome to the forum. Big Grin

Personally I'd get him to the vet as it seems like it could do with being looked into. My dog doesn't like the vet at all anymore so what I do is sit in the car with him and have someone else go into the waiting room and then shout out to me when it's my turn. That way he doesn't get as much time to get anxious etc. Smile

Hi and welcome from me and Vinnie. As Mat says a trip to the vets would be the best. Better safe than sorry at 12 the panting may be heart probs so best to rule that out. Big Grin

Hi and welcome to the forum from Chiquito and I.

I can't add anything to the comments above - as has been said, I think that a trip to the vet would be the best course of action.

Be sure to let us know how you get on Smile

I agree with the above, definitely take him to the vets for a check over, just to be on the safe side.

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me

It sounds like he may need a good all round check up from the vet, now that he is getting older he will be prone to more things that could possibly go wrong.

Best if you take him to the vets, if he does not like going in, ask them if you can take him in the back door it works for my dog.

Hi & welcome.

Panting is a sign of being hot (of course, everybody knows that), being anxious or being in pain.

If he's holding his paw up, I wonder if he has hurt his leg somehow? It needn't be his paw, it could be his leg or shoulder/thigh (you don't say whether it's a front or back leg he holds up).

Has anything else changed over the past few weeks?

I think your best bet is to take him to the vet. Smile It's possible that he's just starting to feel his old age, but a vet will be able to advise you on it. Good luck!

hi everyone, have taken him to vets but poor boy was to stressed to let vets do a proper check up. he was already panting and shaking a lot so was hard to explain. she said he probably has arthritis and is like people said feeling his age. she suggested carm tablets for when he starts to pant as its not all the time and just see how he goes. she said i could bring him back but because it stresses him out so much we may have to think of another plan of action.

it is his left front paw that he holds up when he starts to pant if thats any help.

thank you to everyone who answered and said hello >Big Grin<
