Humph....
Local police looking for info on a hit and run where a dog was killed. (Firstly I wasn't aware that driving away after hitting a dog was an offense, I'm glad about that!)
It's a playing field lots of people walk dogs on and there is a path below the road. Someone was obviously walking a dog that was off lead, it ran off and got hit and died.
My rant is that I said on the page that is sad, maybe a fence needs to go up and people should use leads more only to get the "dogs need to be off lead" gang bash. If your dog comes back to you yeah have it off a lead, but if it runs off into the road then don't be terribly surprised if it gets hit by a car!

Re: Humph....
so sad about the poor dog but yes a hit and run on a dog is viewed in simiuler light as a human hit and run

Re: Humph....
I thought the rules of the road said you weren't to stop/swerve if you saw an animal on the road. Unless for a person obviously, as a person already on the road has right of way.
Obviously I would stop myself if I could. But I didn't think it would be an offense to hit a dog with a car.
Very sad indeed. Dogs shouldn't be off lead in areas like that though IMO if the owner can't keep control of them.

Re: Humph....
Very sad story, and yes the driver must stop and report it if they hit a dog (although not a cat).
I would love to see enclosed areas where people can let their dogs off-leash in safety, like there seem to be in Australia.

I'd be swerving! I would rather hit someone's car or the hedge than a dog. I wouldn't give a damn about my car.

Re: Humph....
Same here. I didn't mean they were my rules
I wouldn't swerve to hit another car though.
I was in a taxi once which hit a badger but the fella couldn't have stopped and if he swerved he would have hit an on coming car and possibly killed two car loads of people.
If it was open I'd swerve though.

I'd swerve into the hedge :p badgers are deadly. They can ruin a car! My friend had a Peugeot that was written off by a badger.

The offense is in not stopping after you hit it.

Re: Humph....
So sad to think that something like that can happen while you are out for a walk - especially that someone would hit the dog and just keep going, pretty disgusting
Here in Australia the law states that you must have your dog "under effective control at all times by means of a leash in any place that the public has access to"
The exception is leash free areas which are designated by the council and, as mentioned above, all of these are fully fenced off ..

Re: Humph....
Thats how it should be here kell! Im all for getting off leash time for dogs, but everywhere is too urban now and too many dogs/kids about. It's all just asking for trouble.
