Havin a slight problem with Leroy we'v had him just over 2 weeks now an he's settled in great an starting to come out his shell more (altho with that some problems r arising too) When we go out he goes in his crate in the kitchen an Diesel is in the hall with baby gate seperatin so she cant bug him. The first night Leroy cried for bout 20mins then settled, then the first time we left him to go out he cried but now hes fine. Goes in the crate when asked an doesn't moan...
The problem is when we come home! He has quickly learned the sound of our car, so from the min u get out u can hear him howlin/cryin/barkin. I stay in a block of flats so this is an issue, especially since we finish work at 2am or 6am an the last thing i want to do is constantly wake my neighbours!
By the time we get to the door hes in a right state an very loud! Before i let him out i try to get him to calm down an sit nice - hopefully teachin him that the whinin wont get him out only calmness will?
But how do i stop him workin himself up from the moment he hears us in the street?
My only other worry is that its not just the sound of us comin home that disturbs him an is mayb like this with every sound!

I'm thinking you could do some practicing during the day. Go out and come back and when you hear him crying barking etc just wait outside. Don't go inside until he has settled. Over time he should learn that barking and crying wont get you back, but when he is quietly waiting you will.
Also when you come back home don't make a big deal out of it, don't look at him, no touching no nothing. Go on with your regular tasks and when he has given up trying to get you attention and is settled. Then go and give him a pat. Always reward the calm behaviour. Never the excited/anxious ones!

Maybe ask you neighbours if they ever hear him when you are not home as well.

Alfie does this with me as well, he recognises the car and I can hear him from outside in the street. I agree with Annie, you could try coming and going during the day. He will soon realise that howling/crying wont get you through the door any quicker

Lily used to do this and I would walk right past her when I came in and stand by her bed. Only when she was in her bed would I say hello. So now when I come in she practically knocks me over to get to her bed before I do for her hellos.

Have you tried leaving the radio on quietly for him while you are out, this may help to disguise the sound of your car a bit and be a comfort while you are not there. Rocky has his own classic selection on the ipod we leave on for him.

I'll try standing outside til he's calmed down, although i can see it taking a while! He gets himself proper wound up really easily! Hes the same when am gettin his dinner ready or try an do sum trainin with him if i take too long he just sits cryin at me - obviously i don't treat him for this. Absolutely no impulse control!

Went out durin the day to pop to the shops an came back already to try out waitin outside til Leroy had calmed down, but as we stood listening we realised the noise wasnt comin from the kitchen but the front door!! Went inside to discover him in the hall with Diesel! Somehow he'd managed to get out his crate an had then jumped the babygate!! Luckily we were only out for an hr an it didn't look like any mischeif had bein goin on between the two of them!
So have to try again tomoro

Tried today when i came home, didn't open front door til he'd quietened down. Then when i came in he started up again, so i told him to šiť but he wouldn't so i just got on with makin my friend a cuppa then we went an sat in the living room, he just barked an barked an barked, everytime i thought he was givin up i'd move to let him out an he'd just start all over again!! I let this go on for half an hr, everytime he started up again i went an sat back down. He probably wasn't totally calm when i did let him out, which i know was wrong of me, but am just so worried about my neighbours!

I think it's worse cause he's trapped in the crate, am sure if he wasn't he wouldn't get quite as wound up, but since he easily jumps the gate i can't risk not puttin him in the crate when i'm out.

Have you covered the sides and top with a blanket/duvet, That really helps. Smile

Cover the crate with blankets? If so my oh had? suggested that but was worried he'd pull them through an chew them?
Am i doin the right thing in leaving him in there til he's calm coz he seemed to get more an more wound up, kinda like he was like "don't leave me in here, what have a done?" or is that my over senstivity coz he's from the pound an dont want him feel abandoned again
