Had our 1 to 1
Hi,
I have posted a few things on here over the last week or so and mentioned that i was taking Louby for one to one training, so i thought i would let you know how she got on!
I took her to the Tailwaggers Club in Harrogate and saw a lady called Angela. I think she was very good. We went through Louby's daily routine, then what she is like outside and also about her behaviour.
It was all very calm, no shouting and no negativity. It was all about ignoring the naughty and praising the good behaviour. Basically not giving her what she wants (attention mainly) when she is jumping on us or barking. After a while Louby would just lay at her feet and at that point she got a treat..she picked it up very quickly.
Then she brought her dog in, a rottweiler. Louby was on the lead and so was her dog. Louby just barked and barked at the dog, Angela just kept talking to her dog nice n quietly (how he heard her above the barking i dont know), and he didnt pay any attention to Louby at all. Gradually the trainer got nearer and nearer to us and Louby just kept right on barking. She let Louby sniff her dog a wee but that was it. Then she put them both in a paddock outside and Louby ran over to her dog, jumped all over him, he growled at her as if to say 'get away from me', but it was ok.
From this the trainer decided she isnt trustworthy around other dogs as she has no manners and doesnt know how to interact nicely. All it takesd is for her to be boisterous around the wrong dog and it nips her, she bites back then they are fighting.
So, we have a quite a few exercises to do when we are home including some heal work, and hopefully she will becoming obedient around us and will hopefully therefore behave better when we start group training.
Sorry its soooo long..
Also, a last thing, Louby is female and it has been mentioned by a couple of people now that she 'looks like a male', because of her body, they say she is very muscular for a female! does this sound right?
Anyhoo, thanks for reading (if you havent fallen asleep half way through).

Re: Had our 1 to 1
It sounds like Louby will get the training she needs with this lady, was her Rottweiler a male or female can you remember. Have you noticed if Louby gets on better with male or female dogs ? Great to start with one dog then build up from there gradually then get her introduced to more dogs.
Keep up with the exercises and heel work I'm sure she will do fine.

Thanks for the update, it sounds really promising!
I wouldn't worry what people say - most of them have never seen a fit, active, muscular dog anyway! She sounds liken a typical, fit Stafford!
And don't worry about the long post, It's great to hear how things go & I haven't fallen asleep yet!

Lots of people think Suki is a boy to so don't woory about it a dog that is in good shape is a sign of a good handler
Do you know anyone with an older and very well socialized dog she can interact with? Suki didn't have any manners at all when we got her but after being around older dogs all the time she learned quickly and now is the dog that people want to socialize their pups with

Sounds really promising, you'll get there with a bit of work, great news
People often refer to Daisy as a 'he' when we're out and about, personally I think she looks pretty femanine and I always have her in girly collars!! So I wouldn't worry about that!!

Re: Had our 1 to 1
great to hear about your 121 training. I wish i could find someone in the Manchester area so i could do teh same. Ozzy has 3 vices, pulls like a train if he is on a collar or harness ( head collar gives me more control) , wont give up a stick for anything, not even steak!!! doesnt like other dogs which is a real shame, i would love just to be able to walk past another dog without him having a thrombie!!!

Re: Had our 1 to 1
With Loubie, she pulls so much on her walks, i am fuming by the time we get back, it does not make me happy to walk her, which is an awful feeling. I want nothing more than to take her on lovely long walks..
We do not trust her with other dogs and she has started in the last couple of weeks barking at nothing whilst walking down the street, at nothing!!
We have a lot of work to do, unfortunately it doesnt happen in that 2 1/2 hour session - i wish!

Re: Had our 1 to 1
Sounds exactly the same as Ozzy, i have found that the dogmatic head collar makes so much difference though and he does walk much much better, ideally I would like him to follow me and jog along on any walk but it's obviously not to be., Your baby looks very simliar to Ozzy but more girlie

Re: Had our 1 to 1
I bought a Halti last week, and she just pulls herself out of it! Wont keep it on.
She thinks we are trying to kill her quite often - like when we bath her, she struggles like you wont believe...needless to say she is a bit grubby at the moment - waiting for a big downpour...
Putting Spot-On flea stuff on her neck - is it acid?? no, but she struggles like it is.

Re: Had our 1 to 1
She sounds very very cheeky, the dogmatic has really helped us, have a look at it on the internet, Ozz tries to wriggle out of it but he cant, now just accepts it after a lot of face planting in the grass to start the walk off with, it has ha loop under the chin so you have complete control and it doesnt go into his eyes. Have you tied going to a groomer for a bath? Oz hates the blower but he smells lovely after it

I got a size 3 but that was too samll so swapped it for a 3a only as Oz has a big head, but they do have sizing guides on the website and waht to measure to get teh right one, if it is wrong they are great at swapping them, £20 sounds about right here is the link http://www.dogmatic.org.uk/

Re: Had our 1 to 1
There are some good training videos on the Dogs Trust website, there is one on stopping your dog pulling on the lead. Lola is a terrible puller and I find she pulls less with a non pull harness. They are quite reasonably priced, Lola has the medium one.

Re: Had our 1 to 1
I did buy her a 'non pull harness' from paws for thought. It is padded all under her legs. And is supposed to restrict her movement when she pulls. It does nothing to stop her, if anything is comfier for her with the padding.
At the training yesterday she showed us how to do heal, but just having bits of chicken. And only saying heel once she was actually at my side, then she got her bit of chicken. The idea is that she will follow close by me wherever i walk for a bit of chicken!! We need to practice this.
