Fighting with your best friend
So, Knox went to his Nannie's yesterday for the day and we left him there most of the night too as we went out to see Sean Lock the comedian.
Anywho, went to fetch him to find Mum looking a little worried. First words to me were "don't touch his ear he's been fighting". Well of course I expected the worse, Knox was looking very sorry for himself but I couldn't see anything immediately wrong with him.
Closer inspection finds that he's got grazes across his head and a little bit of a split in his ear.
So what happened?
Well - he's a bugger for sticks! Loves them - they're like heroin to him. So whilst my Mum and her neighbour Julie went out for a walk yesterday with Knox and Alfie (Julie's golden retriever), Alfie picked up a stick - he's not allowed them, but was teasing Julie going in and out of the trees. Meanwhile Julie was playing with Knox. Eventually Julie went over to Alfie and tried to take the stick off him, Knox thinking this is a great game snapped at the stick snapping it in half and then went to grab the rest of it, whilst Alfie still had hold. This was a little too close for Alfie's liking and he growled at Knox and WHAM bit him straight on his head. Julie grabbed Alfie by his collar just as Knox went to retaliate (which of course he would after being bitten), at this point Julie swung round and shoved her hand in Knox’s mouth and he bit her (accidentally of course and he immediately let go). Julie then ended up with Knox in one hand and Alfie in the other. Two minutes later they’re best of friends again walking round the woods. Julie in the meantime had to go to hospital to have a tetanus.
It sounds really bad but I’m just so relieved it wasn’t Knox that initiated it. Julie is fine and isn’t worried about Alfie as he got off scot free. She’s more concerned about Knox’s ear (she put steri-strips on it to hold it together). Vets this afternoon at 6ish. I'm thinking it will probably just be antibiotics as his ear looks ok this morning and he's not flinching too much if you touch him near it.

Re: Fighting with your best friend
It sounds just like Alfie was unhappy with the behaviour and just just warning him, and it maybe went a bit further in the heat of the moment. But since a fight didn't happen after it isn't too bad.
Hope he gets on ok at the vets.

Poor Knox!
These things happen & we learn from them, don't we? Mental note made to not allow playing with sticks when other dogs are around!

Steri strips where would be without these, well done for doing that. so long as the wound is clean it should heal just fine. As Mat says it sounds like it was just handbags and nothing to worry about

Re: Fighting with your best friend
I'm not worried at all to be honest - he's the softest thing around. Alfie is very stubborn and very possessive especially when it comes to stuff he's not allowed.
More concerned that the Mother will be worried about taking him out. She said she won't and hopefully she'll be ok

Re: Fighting with your best friend
Thanks - I sprayed it with F10 last night. It's stuff I use for cleaning with the reptiles. Totally animal safe. I was going to put the barrier ointment on him but he was flinching too much and yelping last night so I thought it best not to mess.
Wait and see what the vets says. I do think it'll just be antibiotics. I think the rip is starting to heal already with the steri-strips so hopefully it won't need glueing.

Re: Fighting with your best friend
Things do escalate very quickly with dogs, and then when it's over, they act as though nothing has happened and all is forgiven. Poor Knox, hope he heals up quickly, but glad it wasn't more serious too
