Just wanted to say hey!
Hi all, just joined up and I'm new to all this but thought I'd give it a go.
Have only had my staffy a few weeks and problems are constantly cropping up. If anyone has any advice on how to get the little devil to behave, I'd be very grateful.
That's all for now
Xx

Well he eats anything he can get his mouth round, every night he is guaranteed to poop in the kitchen even if he has been out and he's now started to wee in the living room when I'm there. All little things really

Re: Just wanted to say hey!
I notice your profile says he's 3, so I'm assuming he's a rescue? If that's the case, these behaviours are common.
It may be that the old owners just didn't bother to train him, or it could be that the change of scenery and new home has upset his routines. A lot of people here have had rescue dogs, though, so I daresay they'll be able to give you some advice on how to deal with it.
With the weeing, try to take him out into the garden frequently. When he pees outside, give him loads of praise and fuss. When he pees inside, make sure you clean it up thoroughly - if the scent is left there, he may associate that place with urinating.
For chewing, teaching the 'leave it' command is often useful. To stop him in the mean time, you can buy liquids that you spray onto objects to stop him chewing them, as it has a bad taste.

Re: Just wanted to say hey!
Yep he's a rescue. Was quite good at first and only went to the toilet in the garden, it's the last few days he's began with weeing in the living room so I'm baffled by it. He's now also learnt to jump the wall and my neighbours have gone mad so can't let him off his lead even at home. Could these two issues be linked do you think? We have been trying hard to train him but he's crackers lol and does what he wants

Re: Just wanted to say hey!
it sounds as if something has upset him. Is he in a routine? they are at their best if you do things on a regular basis. Let him out every 30 mins offer a treat if he does his business outside too. If he was well behaved when you got him whats changed? As for jumping the wall you may need to make the wall higher with wood or mesh etc. Being persistent with him should sort him out be firm with him and reward any good behaviour

Re: Just wanted to say hey!
As Steve said, it could be because he needs more exercise.
If you've only had him for a few weeks, it might take some time for him to settle down. It's a new, unfamiliar place with unfamiliar scents.
How high is your wall? A lot of people - not just with rescues! - find that they need to add something to the wall to reinforce it, such as a leaning trellis. Some dogs just like to escape.

Re: Just wanted to say hey!
The wall is 5ft, think he likes next doors dog but it doesn't like him! I do think a lot of it is as we are having to keep him on his lead in the garden so this will account for routine being upset. Can't risk him doing a runner tho. Thank you all for the advice so far. Will persevere with him and hopefully we can get him trained up!

Re: Just wanted to say hey!
Welcome to the forum
In regards to messing in the house.... you've only had him 3 weeks he needs to learn right from wrong if hes not previously been trained. A change of surrounding could be the reason hes doing this. Id suggest you making a fuss/praising him/giving him a treat when he does his business outside? I used a firm 'no' when he did it indoors and time out for 10 mins. Clean it up properly as the scent can linger and he may associate that place for peeing.
Chewing: make sure hes got plenty to play with, a kong full of treats, nylabones etc. the sooner you can teach him the 'leave' command the better. He will soon learn whats his and what isnt. We used a spray liquid on skirting boards/shelving units to stop him chewing the corners as it leavs a bad taste, might be worth a try?
Keep us updated, hope this helps

Re: Just wanted to say hey!
Perseverance is often the best way forward. If you're worried about the wall-jumping, try putting a low length of fencing (doesn't need to be big) along the top and fix it so that it leans in at an angle. This will prevent him from climbing over the top.
What is he fed and how much exercise does he get each day, if you don't mind me asking? These can have a large impact on behaviour.

Re: Just wanted to say hey!
Has he got a crate at all? That can help with the toileting and also gives him his own space. Rescues can take a while to settle as they are overwhelmed by the change in environment even if it is for the better! What do you feed him on?

Re: Just wanted to say hey!
He's having dry biscuits twice a day. It's asdas own brand and seems to really enjoy it. He gets walked twice a day too, 30 to 40 mins each time. We both work full time so can be less some days.

No crate yet but have been considering it. You're right Steve, he needs to get out more.

Hi & welcome to the forum
Like already said it may because he is settling in and seeing what boundries etc he can push. It is important that if he wees inside that you correct him while he is doing it and not afterwards. Dogs are very in the moment so if you walk into a room and he has already done a number 2 on the floor, it's too late to correct. Just a firm no and then let him into the garden. Like already said loads of praise once he has done his business in the garden. Maybe put him on a longer line so he has enough freedom to walk about supervised but not too much to jump the fence

Re: Just wanted to say hey!
Hi and welcome to the forum, daisy is a rescue and although was house trained we had a few accidents at first but they got less frequent over time. Sometimes it just seemed that she forgot where she was and would just have a wee in the house right in front of me which was very frustrating!! I would say no and put her outside for a few minutes, also when I took her out would say 'do your business' when she started doing something and then praise her afterwards, I think she just got to learn what that meant, now I can just open the door tell her to ' go and to her business' and if she needs to go she will. You haven't had him long, he will still be settling in. Try and be patient and with a bit of work you will gradually iron out the problems.

I do believe in plenty of stimulation not only physical but also mentally and routine at all times. It does make a happy pooch!

Re: Just wanted to say hey!
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
Cannot really add much more than has already been suggested. Rocky is also a rescue dog who had issues when we got him and we are still addressing them now, he has been with us for just over 2 years. Extra long walks have definitely helped, he gets 2 walks of an hour and a half a day and we will add another now the days are longer in the evening too.
Good food is a must, Rocky is now fed on Barking Heads TLC, this has also made a difference to his behaviour. Go for the best quality you can afford. Anything from the list below should be fine:
http://staffy-bull-terrier.com/dry_food
You may want to contact the rescue centre where you got him from, they may have some background information on him which may help to balance things out and they may have some tips for you too.
