Re: Even More Snow
Started snowing here again too. Loki is hyperactive but the wind's so icy it kills, so I'm trying to keep him occupied inside. It's not going very well so I hope the weather turns more spring-like soon

Re: Even More Snow
There's a pile of snow about 4 foot high at my office door. I'm just after washing the van and car outside too and my wee fingers are about to fall off

Re: Even More Snow
Still no snow here, you get the odd flurry but it doesn't lie, it's freezing though. It must be awful for people who are stuck in it and farmers having to dig their sheep out.

Absolutely thousands tbh Janey. I probably deal with maybe 10-15 different farmers that have lost about 100 or so each. And there's many, many more farms that I don't know.

Re: Even More Snow
Hypothermia would set in to a wee lamb in next to no time so a lot of them hadn't even got a hope.

Never in my lifetime tbh, not to this scale. I heard someone saying it's the worst weather for the time of year since the late 60's??
It's just been extra bad because it's the time of year for new borns.

Re: Even More Snow
last really bad weather was late 60's and then again in 76 I think . Remember 76 as we had a mega summer and a mega winter and I was 8 years old

Re: Even More Snow
Yea that sounds about right Dave tbh, similar to what I was told.
It might sound a bit heartless, the death of animals is horrible, but financially it is also terrible for farmers. To lose a big portion of their income could really be the end for some people. Most farmers do a bit of everything lambs, cattle, potatoes/carrots etc. But when one end is doing badly the other ends pay for the loss.
Last year was terrible for Irish farmers as the price of everything was ridiculously low. This year was looking quite good and then has hit a total nose dive.

Re: Even More Snow
It will be a hard year. Hay is going to be ridonk to buy this year, i am really dreading it. I wanted to get a pony this year as a bit of company for the nag, but with the estimated price of £6 a bale i don't think i will bother. He will have to do with me for company.

Re: Even More Snow
thankfully, down here the lying snow has almost gone, although it's still too, too cold due to that horrible northerly/easterly air flow.
the last time I remember it as bad as this was the winter of 1962/63. It started snowing on Boxing Day and dumped a whole load of snow that stayed until about the end of March. I'm afraid that I don't know how the farmers coped then - I was quite young and my main concern was my pony.
Now, although I feel just as fed up as everyone else with this never-ending winter, I am aware of the wider picture. To say that I feel sorry for people who are still struggling with deep frozen snow, and especially for farmers with livestock and crops, sounds feeble and (hopefully not) patronising, but what can we do? Except pray for Spring.
