A 30-year-old man from Bedfordshire, whose partner filmed him repeatedly beating the family dog before reporting the attacks to police, has been jailed.

Konrad Kocjan, of Hertford Road, Bedford, was sentenced after the court saw footage of him whipping the dog and hitting its head against a wall.

District Judge Kenneth Sheraton described the attacks as "gratuitous" and "purposeful".

Kocjan was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison at Luton Magistrates' Court.

District Judge Sheraton added: "I have to say that I am no enthusiastic lover of animals and, from time to time, I see cases of ill treatment come before the court.

"This is, in my view, one of the worst I have seen."

'Irresponsible and wrong'
The court heard an expert who examined the film of Kocjan's female Staffordshire bull-terrier cross found the attacks would have caused "physical and mental distress and suffering", but that the dog was left with no long-term wounds.

Parminder Matharu, for the defence, said his client accepted the attacks had been "irresponsible and wrong".

The dog had caused injuries to Kocjan's son, Mr Matharu said, but the court heard there was no medical report to substantiate that claim.

Kocjan was told that depending on his behaviour, he would be released from prison halfway through his sentence. He was also disqualified from keeping animals in future.

I would be surprised if he does not give his partner and his son the same treatment, perpetrators ain't fussy who they take there anger out on.....on your way kocjan, the boats waiting you POS.

A custodial sentence is a step in the right direction.

Only about 34 weeks too little right enough.

If he were a dog he'd ave been castrated or pts.....

Horrible that's right, take your anger out on the dog because if you lose your temper with a person, you'll get in real trouble.

And people wonder why dogs attack. Wish the dogs that put up with this would attatck!!

He should have got life in prison.. Or better yet... Hung!!!

I am impressed he got a proper sentence. He's obviously got a problem but most people ignore that kind of behaviour, including police/the courts. I'm amazed his wife actually filmed him and handed the footage to the courts. Well done to her. I hope the poor Staffy is somewhere cosy to compensate. What a weirdo. It's good that he's going to prison - it shows that beating dogs is regarded as mentally ill or abusive in this country.

Sorry for dragging old threads up but this one needed my opinion! Glad he got sentenced but 18 weeks does not seem like justice!! If that was an attack on a human it would of been 18month. What makes a defenseless dog any diffrent apart from the fact it cant report the incidents itself.. some proper sickos around these days!
