outie belly button
my puppy has an "outie" belly button. he is 8 weeks old.
the breeder said it was rare and that it wont affect his standard whatsoever.
i've never seen that on a dog before and i was wondering if any of you guys have had the same encounter .

Re: outie belly button
I haven't seen it before but like the breeder said I don't think it'll effect much. It may even change as he grows.
Also, if you paste the IMG code directly onto the forum it'll show your photo like this,

No worries. It took me ages to work it all out. He looks great anyway, especially in your avatar

Re: outie belly button
I'm just looking up about Outie Belly Buttons in pups at the moment and apparently it may or may not be a problem,
some can be umbilical hernia from the mother being too rough when she cut the cord after birth
Some umbilical hernias are just a little wad of fat; completely harmless
Your vet can easily tell the difference by palpating (poking and feeling) the hernia, and advise you whether it needs repair. In my own experience, usually they do not need repair.
Maybe it's worth asking the vet when you next go for a checkup?

Re: outie belly button
It's an umbilical hernia.
It's thought they are a hereditary thing now (not caused by mum being too rough) and dogs that have them shouldn't be bred from.
There is no way of knowing whether it will get bigger or stay the same size but looking at the size of that one, I'd say don't worry about it, just keep an eye on it. If it gets bigger then it might need operating on.
If you get your dog neutered then the vet will probably pop a stitch in at the same time whether it gets bigger or not, providing it doesn't need operating on before hand.

Yea it's the same over here don't worry. No I don't think it will effect him that way.
The vet will deal with it if he/she feels it is needed

im so scared if my dog loses his pedigree he will become a categorised dog like the amstaff, the french here have a really strict law about dogs they call "dangerous"

Re: outie belly button
It def won't effect your pedigree at all don't worry about that.
I thought you maybe meant would it effect you for showing your dog at dog shows.
But having a different belly button or possible hernia will not make his pedigree any less valid.

Re: outie belly button
He's lovely pup Marine! and still very young - the outie belly button may well resolve itself in time, but just check with the vet next time you go.
As Mat says, his pedigree is safe so don't worry about that.
Oh and by the way, my younger sister had an outie belly button into her teens - no rough mother or hernia - but now she has a lovely belly button!
I could be wrong, but the umbilical hernias I have seen in humans and animals looked worse than this - an area of bulging around the navel, not just an "outie".
Do let us know how you get on at the vets. Best wishes ><

Re: outie belly button
just looks like a tickle button to me :p
as said... just keep an eye on it then ask the vet to take a peek when youre there next unless it shows any bad signs (discolouring, getting bigger etc)
hopefully it will turn out to be fine
looks like you got yourself a lovely dog

Re: outie belly button
Looks like an umbilical hernia. My girl has one and vet said not to worry about it and it can be fixed when she is spayed as its just an extra stitch. He did say not to breed her (which I have no intentions of doing). As long as you are careful and make sure he doesn't catch it on anything he should be fine

Re: outie belly button
hey guys.
we thought iggy's belly button was a closed topic until last week it began changing color and looks like it's going to burst.
we took him to another vet who told us it was something about his belly button not resorbing. he told us to try homeopathy for 10 days. and then if nothing's changed then we need to do surgery.
here's a pic of the belly.

Re: outie belly button
Wow it does look like its gotten much worse! I can see its protruding out more and also is very red. When Gwen was 8 weeks old she had an outtie belly button. It slowly went away somehow and now (shes 6 months old) its completely gone! I am that he is okay and that he doesn't need surgery. Poor baby

yay yay yay ! homeopathy is working !! his belly button is "drying up" it's not as big and as sore as it was. he still has to take the pills for another few days until the appointment with the vet. i guess there's no need for surgery. ^:]^
