changed puppy food

ok so i put up a topic last week regarding my pups food and metioned i had her on wagg which resulted in criticism lol. So i put her onto the Pets At Homes own brand and she absolutely loves it and i put a little yumega oil into it to keep her coat and skin in top condition.

recently ive noticed that not only is her stool alot greener and softer (possibly jsut food change) but it does not seem to fill her i mean she ate 3 full bowls today and was still hungry. i was informed i shud buy her wainwrights although i cannot afford that food at the minute but should i switch her to it when i change from puppy to adult food or just keep her on the same brand as she seems to love it ???

If she likes it & she's doing well on it, stick with it. PAH's own brand isn't the best, but it's definitely not the worst!

She might seem hungry still because she's still adapting to the new food - it can take their systems a little while to get used to it. If you think she isn't getting enough then increase the portions a little - the guidelines on the packet are just that - guidelines.

Did you switch her straight over? If so, that could explain the soft poo. It's generally better to introduce a new food gradually over about a week or so.

hey caryll yes i moved straight over but i tried switch gradually but she just ate round the wagg.

but there is something about PAH i really trust and i dont think they would put * ingreients in their food so thats why i tried it

Hey, we used PAH adult for tyke, i would say same as caryll its not the best bur no the worse. My personal rating would be that it didnt suit tyke and we swapped to wainwrights which he has taken to very well

Which pets at home one is it, just been looking through the ingredients for some of them and its not good to be honest. :/

This is one of the ones I looked at and another did not even have a ingredients listed on their website which is even more worrying.

First Ingredient is cereals which is always a bad sign to start with:

Then second ingredient listed is Meat and Animal Derivatives (Chicken minimum 10%) , Again not great this could be basically anything for the other 90%. You think the horse meat scandal is bad well imagine whats in your dogs food when is says meat and animal derivatives?

Protein level seems rather low for puppy food.

I also always avoid dog food that comes in pretty colours.

Personally I would change when you can.

I'd have to agree with John here, the ingredients do not look good at all which is why she may still be hungry after eating, not enough protein in it and too much filler (cereals).

If that was me, I'd change to Wainwrights, much better quality food than PAH own brand.

Good point regarding the 'pretty colours', I don't see any need for it, just artificial food colouring added in for no reason.

Have to say I agree - I tend to think of Wainwrights when I talk about PAH brands. The Pets st Home named brands don't look good at all!

On the subject of dog food I was having a root about a while ago and was amazed to find how tough the nutritional guidelines for "Complete" dog food is. In the EU all pet food has to meet FEDIAF standards, so while all dog food sold as complete is nutritionally good it’s all the other nasty’s like some additives you need to keep an eye out for.
Some things that separate the brands are how they make it digestible for the maximum benefit for the dog and added elements that go above and beyond the guidelines.

It’s a weighty 78 page document and if you don’t want to read it all then skip to;
Page 18 table a4, page 36, 44, 48 table 4.2 (three quarters down, shocking), page 66 and 69 well worth a look.

I’d also agree with John to steer away from bright coloured food, while it might meet nutritional levels it’s full of unnecessary additives and chemicals. It’s only to make it look pretty for humans as the dogs can’t see half the colours in there anyway.

You could try adding some cooked, cooled chicken to the kibble until you can get onto something of a higher protein value.
