hugging my dog, right or wrong?
Hi all, my family and I enjoy giving baileyboi hugs and when we do he gives a mmmmmmm a content sound? However reading certain articles stating that dogs don't interpret ate it this way. What are your views? Hugging your dog, right or wrong?

Re: hugging my dog, right or wrong?
I do it all the time tbh, I don't think it would be a problem unless the dog obviously doesn't want you doing it. But they would soon let you know if they didn't lol.

Re: hugging my dog, right or wrong?
I've read that, in the dog world, the closest thing to a hug is actually a dominance thing, so some dogs might be uncomfortable with it, but that because we spend so much time with our dogs, most of them come to learn and tolerate or enjoy doing things they wouldn't enjoy if it were another dog, ie hugs. If he doesn't seem uncomfortable, he isn't . I only hug Loki when he's sleepy so he doesn't think I'm playing and start jumping around like a lunatic, but when I do hug him he's fine with it.

Yeah that's exactly how we give our hugs, only when Bailey is relaxed and willing to except them that is when we offer hugs.

I hug Kuchar a lot, but sometimes he's not in a huggy mood and squirms away. And sometimes I'm not in the mood for his hugs, when he puts a paw on each shoulder and covers my face with licks, so I squirm away!

Thats actually a really good question .... Max is my world after my family, and I cant walk past him without strokeing, patting, huggin him ... but he can deffo take it or leave it most of the time he's a very independant dog and everything is on his terms (never known a dog like him) .. Em only makes a fuss of him when he comes to her for it, and it works
I just cant help myself though

Ledger loves a hug he will snuggle as close as he can to anyone flicking your arm up to go around him and he will also with me wrap his front paws around my neck and nuzzle his head into my shoulder and at night he has taken to lying on and wrapping his paws around my leg to sleep

Re: hugging my dog, right or wrong?
marley is very very aloof and laska is polar opostite but both love a hug. Im all for pack leadership but nothing helps better with a dog than when they know you love them and trust them. marley loves hugs and snuggles as does laska with no shortfalls so far. Go on hug"a"bull there is nothing like it :oD

My Tara loves a hug, a paw on each shoulder and she rubs the top of her head under my chin, she does give the best hugs.
But Frank isnt one for hugs, if i go to give him a cozie he thinks im playing and will go find a sock and bring it back for me to play with him, but when he is sleeping i do alwasys sneak a cozie from him, and he will lick my nose stand out turn around and give me a grump for disturbing him haha xxx

Re: hugging my dog, right or wrong?
There's a difference between us hugging our dogs and a complete stranger doing it, or children who can sometimes be a little rough.
My dogs all love a fuss and a cuddle, but I wouldn't let someone they didn't know well do it to them.

Re: hugging my dog, right or wrong?
I think it totally depends on how comfortable your dog is with hugs.
Dempsey loves gentle hugs from his family, but if the hug is more forceful he'll interpret it as play & you'd better get your face outta the way!
I'd never let a stranger hug him though - too dangerous.

I couldn't imagine a day without Rocky cuddles, he will jump up onto either my hubbys or my lap for cuddles. He loves his cuddles and is a very loving affectionate dog. It's a shame some people aren't so caring as he is

Re: hugging my dog, right or wrong?
I do it all the time, its something all dogs should at least be used to or tolerate. Should the worst ever hppen and your dog goes into a pound, they will hug your dog and it may potentially fail a temperament test if it won't allow close contact. We have to remember we are not dogs so we can't treat our dogs like we think a dog would, cause a dog/dog relationship is vastly different to a dog/human relationship.

Bacchus loves cuddles. He snuggles in all the time and will even put his head on my shoulder when we are cuddling on the sofa.
Mind you he's getting no cuddles tonight because he was naughty earlier and he knows he's in the bad books. He's grovelling like mad at the moment, trying to get me to forgive him. I'm finding it very difficult to resist though.

Dempsey likes gentle hugging Otherwise, he just thinks you want to wrestle
When he finishes his meals sometimes or he wakes up and is still sleepy, I put my arms around him and he just flops onto my lap and goes to sleep instantly.
