My ritual when I was on day release at College was down to Greggs for a couple of flat Cornish and to the pub for a pint ( to soak up the pastie of course ) and back to school

Never Kathy how dare you it was part of my childhood and definitely its roots was in the North East
Good old Wiki
Greggs was founded by John Gregg as a Tyneside bakery in 1939.[5] It opened its first shop in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1951.[6]
When John died in 1964, the bakery was taken over by his son, Ian, assisted by Ian's brother, Colin. Major expansion began soon after, including the acquisitions of other bakeries such as Glasgow based Rutherglen in 1972, Leeds based Thurstons in 1974, Broomfields the Bakers, London, Bowketts the Bakers Kent, Tooks the Bakers (East Anglia) and Manchester based Price's in 1976.[7]
In 1994, the company acquired the Bakers Oven chain of bakers' shops from Allied Bakeries.[7]
In 1999, Greggs rebranded its 100 Braggs bakers shops as Greggs of the Midlands and its Leeds-based Thurston chain as Greggs of Yorkshire.[8]
Starting in 2003, in an attempt to test the foreign market, Greggs opened a total of ten stores in Belgium; principally in Antwerp and Leuven.[8] These have all since closed as Greggs concentrates on the UK market.
On 9 December 2008, Greggs announced that all of its 165 Bakers Oven branded shops would be re-branded into the Greggs brand so that all the shops could benefit from the Greggs national advertising campaign.[9]
In March 2011, the company opened its 1,500th shop, in York.[3]
In May 2012, frozen food chain Iceland began selling Greggs pasties.

Sayers was THE bakers before Greggs opened up here, or at least, became more popular. So shush, Dave, don't insult Sayers

Does your part of Yorkshire not have a cooplands? ours in town is 3 shops down from Greggs, I tend to use both depending on what I want, sausage rolls and coffee has to be Greggs as Cooplands coffee is awfull, sammiches and pasties have to be from Cooplands, can't beat their corn beef and potato pasty in shortcrust pastry . Not a fan of Greggs' bread or the pastry they use on their pasties.

Re: Greggs
You have to try the corn beef pastie Ella, the greatest pastry ever, and their breakfast pastie is the only way anyone should start their day, sausage, beans and scrambled egg in a pastie sounds so wrong but it works so well. I was dribbling while writing about them just now and have just put my coat on, and remembered it's Sunday
