2 * fighting!
First topic message reminder :
please can someone give me advice, i have 2 female staffs, baby 3 1/2 years & ruby 7 months, we have had both dogs since they was 8 weeks, never had a problem before! Tuesday we went and got them some chews they had one each and was playing as usaull and all of a sudden started ripping into each other felt like they was going at it for hours my partner struggaled to split them and it took about 4 mins there was alot of blood and the smaller dog (ruby) ended up with a fairly bad wound to her ear, i was terrified! yesterday afternoon partner took them for a walk in the park 1 of them found a ball and they ended up going for each other, yet again today (fri) they have gone for each other again and now every time they see each other they start growling and trying to get at each other, we have got 1 shut in kitchen and other in the front room. I have also got 3 children under 5 and i am really worried they could end up hurt between theses dogs. the younger dog ruby has just started her 1st period although we intend on getting them both spayed, partner upset at the thought of having to give up one of the dogs as he loves them both so much, im scared to move incase they go for each other, really dont know what to do any advice will be grately appreciated? will this problem go away? or is the only answer to get rid of one?

I'm sorry, I know I'm new here, but squirting citric ACID up a dog's nose or in its eyes is an absolute no no for me.
It's so important that these things are debated, how would you get your baby out of a situation if there's only you + your dog/s ???
I personally welcome any stirling ideas, but for me the 'acid test' is downright cruel
I'm sorry but I'm glad I'm not a dog in your house
And not wanting to be inflammatory, but who the hell carries a Jif lemon with them on their walks ? Or a lemon + a squeezer ?
I'm not going to get on an orange box about the rest, + I really don't mean to attack, but lemons=NOOOOOOO

I would never use lemon juice I only said thats one i heard i also heard of a woman puring beer in a mastiff's eyes while the mastiff chomped on her sons arm but i would never use it, my god thats disgusting and she knew by the look i gave her that i was not impressed. If i actually said "I" would use or do use lemon citrus i would understand your post but i didn't so i don't appreciate what you said about never wanting to be a dog in my house because you know nothing about me or how i bring up my dogs.

I think i will just stick to prevention rather than cure. And when i have had to part dogs in fights my techniques like scruffing and holding them till they part have worked brilliantly and i will continue to use them.

Re: 2 * fighting!
Ive seen a lot of dog fights but I would love to see someone pick up two staffords which are locked onto each other (18kg in each hand respectively) and think they will let go! They will just hold on until your arms get tired (I personally wouldn't even be able to get them off the ground!). The thing with staffs when they fight is that they dont see red, they dont snap and snarl and try to get a better grip. They assess, aim and grip usually going for between the neck and shoulder or the closest thing too it. But they remain calm and calculated, they know what they are doing which is why its hard to make them let go!!! In that respect if it wasn't my dog and I couldnt shout at it to stop I would probably prefer to use a break-stick. Only my personal opinion though and you do need to know how to use it, Ive never seen any injuries though like caryll has. Im sure that would put me off too.

100 % agree apart from I haven't seen lots of dog fights, but I would love to see someone pick up 2 locked on lumps of serious rage as well, I couldn't do it !!!!

You didn't say you wouldn't do it, + I got from that that you would. So, I apologise in front of the world BUT I still wouldn't want to be a dog in your house I'm afraid, because you have no idea how to get your babies out of a scrap if you are unlucky enough to encounter one.
New thread coming on...................

Re: 2 * fighting!
Oh, dear, I don't think any of us are going to agree on this one, are we? I think the best thing is to try and avoid any situations that could arise in a full on dog fight! Easier said than done, sometimes, I know, but I've had dogs for 40+ years and I've never (touch wood) had the need to use any of the methods given here!
Let's face it, if you're on your own & you have two staffs fighting, you have little or no chance of seperating them without injury.
Just be watchfull & carefull & learn a dog's body language. If you do carry a break stick, then learn how to use it properly in every scenario.

Re: 2 * fighting!
Zetstaff - I have probably seen about 10 dog fights and even that was enough for me! I used to work in boarding and breeding kennels. I also ask for it by offering to help people with the most impossible dogs in the world. How I see it though if I can help those people to understand their dogs a bit better, and to keep them out of rescue, then its worth a couple of nips on my fingers pulling apart unruly dogs.
Having said that I have never had a dog go for me I have just reacted to stop the dogs getting hurt! After all we have the NHS, vets are much more expensive!

ZetStaff:
You have no right to say such a thing, I'v parted many dog fights, I'v worked in kennels i'v parted things from jackrussells to rottweilers and i'v done it extremely well because i am willing to get inbetween two dogs like no one else would at the shelter, I'v parted my dogs during fighting, I'v parted my dog when he got attacked and i will continue to do so, I have been able to part them so the wounds are limited to punchers not tears.
There are many ways to part dogs during fights so what makes you think your way is the only one!

Re: 2 * fighting!
just reed this thread, i think the two bitches started fighting because of the pup going on heat. its definitely a pecking order thing . i t will only get worse , you should think about giving your dog to someone who hasnt got another dog. if you give her to someone with a male she will probably try and dominated it as she gets older, then more fighting. definately get her spayed. might calm her down. nothing worse than staffords fighting....
as for the braking stick ,dunno.. i have used the finger up the butt of the dog method , and it definately works, dog let go straight away..
