Re: Foot long rat bit child...
Rats scare the sh** out of me, how anyone could keep one as a pet is beyond me. I got rid of our bird feeders and stopped feeding the dogs outside and I never leave the back door open anymore, it's a pain as I used to leave the patio doors open for the dogs and kids in the summer but after seeing rats pass through my garden I keep them shut. I also have a shovel near the back door and I will actively chase and kill any rats I see in my garden, dirty vile creatures that should be hunted to extinction. I don't mind hedgehogs coming through but I do try and gently direct them out the gate with a broom because they're dirty and flea ridden, I have no desire to hurt them though.

Re: Foot long rat bit child...
I've seen the damage they can do and therefore avoid them at all costs, unless I have my shovel handy. There was a local golfer reached into some shrubbery to retrieve his ball and startled a rat, it bit him on the hand and it became infected and after a few days the infection had travelled up his arm, the doctors drew a line around the top of his arm and told him if it reached that point it would have to come off, he was about an inch away from losing his arm before it went down, don't know what the infection was but it immediately raised my fear of rats. If I have to go in the loft now or put my hands somewhere I can't see I make quie a bit of noise about it to hopefully scare them off.

The words long rat and foot should never appear in the same sentence

Re: Foot long rat bit child...
I got bitten by a rat when I was a child. thankfully it was a "farm" rat, not a sewer rat. It was my fault, my friend and I used to turn over straw bales at the local farm and catch the mice we found in our hands. I turned over a bale and there was a rat, and I caught it in my bare hands and unlike the little farm mice, this thing fastened itself onto my finger and wouldn't let go - OW!
The knuckle of the finger where it bit me is swollen to this day - 50+ years later.
Moral - don't mess with rats! >
