Say hi to Sky
Hi all, i have just got my first Staffy. i had dogs before so im not a compleate novice. shes 4 months old and a rescue dog. the previouse owners couldnt cope with her being so boistrous with there young family. Any help or advice will be greatfully recieved regarding the breed. i have her booked in for a 7 week training course starting next friday. She does have bit of a skin problem on her head caused by mites living in the hair folicals and pushing the hairs out. but vet says its something that all dogs have but staffies seem to be more prone to it. any advice on that please? is it nervs or dietry? anything i can rub on?

Welcome to the forum from me and the monster
She's very pretty. It's true that Staffords are prone to skin issues and sometimes mites. Just follow what your vets tells you and they are easily treated.
They should be able to give you a course of treatment that lasts around 7-10 days

Hi and welcome from me and ebony! Sky looks lovely Congrats on your rescue ebony is also a fellow rescue dog! not sure how much they work but I've seen people use these on a programme before about what people do who live far out away from anyone with their dogs (can't remember), but you could always try them! It's easy enough to clear up wih the prescribed stuff from your vet though so don't worry! here's a few things I found for you!
Like many parasites, mites on dogs are not always easy to get rid of. Luckily, there are a number of natural herbal ingredients that can be used as a safe and effective alternative to the harsh chemicals present in so many conventional mite treatments. A commonly used herb used to get rid of a number of parasites (including mites) is Garlic which has become renowned for its natural repellent and antibacterial properties. You can also use Wormwood which is natural pesticide has been used for centuries as a natural parasite repellant and is frequently used to rid pets of mange, worms and ear mites. I've also heard that Neem and Lemongrass also act as natural insecticides and their natural skin healing properties help to soothe irritated skin and promote healing after a nasty mite infestation. Lastly, the herbal ingredient Niaoli works as an antiseptic, and helps to cleanse and heal the skin. It also works as an excellent tissue stimulant and can be given to pets to help the skin heal and re-build after a mange infestation.

Re: Say hi to Sky
Hi thanks to you all for your comments. I think she's gorgeous too but then I would lol. Vets not really given me any help, just told me to go back if it gets any worse and they will drench her every week for six weeks!! Not really happy with that so I'm going to give you advice a try. Anybody know what the mites are called? Many thanks for advice.

Re: Say hi to Sky
The common mite is called demodex and can be treated, it is easier to treat in the earlier stages rather than later on as it's progressed.
If you feel like you must, don't be afraid to get another vets opinion. I've found that depending on who you speak to you can get very different levels of help
